It seems only fair that I devote a bit of space to the ways in which we get from A to B. As far as we have worked out there are a number of different options of train tickets, these range from the express bullet train, the soft sleeper, the hard sleeper, the soft chair, the hard chair and finally standing room only - while it is nice to be offered the choice we have found the reality to be that you get whatever is left over and if you head off the beaten track which Tom and I have been doing you get less choice.
We have now sampled the hard chair on an 11 hour over night trip and the standing ticket on a 5 hour journey which left at the ridiculous time of 4am. What amazes me most are the way that people contort themselves into postions including underneath the chairs to make use of any space going. Given that Tom and I seemed to be the on board entertainment I stricly ruled out trying to bend myself into any positions which would draw any more attention to myself- it literally feels like holding court with a
range of passengers who want to practice their English, including the coin collecting fanatic who thought a 2p was the greatest thing in the world, an older man whose niece makes viagra - where we aware of it and did we use it and a woman responsible for importing wine to china who quizzed us for half an hour on what makes a good aperetiff.
