When we left Airlie today it was chucking it down, a good day to leave. It was only a 4 hour journey up the coast to Townsville. Got booked into Reef Lodge, very nice room we even had our own fridge, toaster and kettle!!
That afternoon we went for a walk along the strand (sea front) and checked out the cinema times for tomorrow. Like most other beaches up North of Australia you can't swim in them because of stingers. The town is quite spread out, not a lot to see or offer. It has quite a scenic backdrop in comparrison to other towns. It had Castle Hill over looking the town which gave it a bit of character. Townsville is the gateway to Magnetic Island, which we are unsure if we are doing yet.
Back to the hostel for some dinner and a little bit of tv, but the tv is outside and we got eaten by mozzies, even with the stuff on! I have lost count of how many mozzie and bed bug bites I have!
We chilled in our room, as it was such a nice room we didn't mind spending time in it reading and
Castle hill in the Background
It's only a couple of meters away from being called a mountain. researching Asia. Plus it has been chucking it down here too. The further north we have gone the more tropical it has become, which means more rain.

We tried to change our flight to Cairns for tomorrow, but it was booked so we have changed it to Friday. So we have decided tomorrow we will go to Magnetic Island and hire a Moke (open top car) for the day. We walked around the town, went to the library for a free hour on the internet. Back to the hostel for lunch and we changed our flight to Singapore for Monday! How exciting!
After lunch we had a walk around the Queens Botanic gardens which were pretty. In the garden there were bird enclosures. ANdy made a friend with a yellow crested cockatoo who kept saying 'who are you', 'where ya going'? Funny! Needless to say Andy was there for half an hour talking to it.
That evening we went to the cinema to see 'When a Stranger Calls', this was ok a typical american thriller. It was a remake of an old 70's movie.
Later that night we had $2 pizza and garlic bread for dinner (as
we had an oven). We sat on our table outside of our room with tea light candles and music, very nice.

Gutted!! Its still raining in fact it's raining cats and dogs. So we are in two minds as whether to go to Magnetic island or not. It turned out to be not! As we thought that going to a pretty island in the rain wouldn't be so nice in the rain, so we had to spend another day in boring Townsville passing time on.
So plan B was to go to a place called Reef HQ a big aquarium modelled on the great barrier reef, when we got there we were astounded at the price. It was $25+ each so we gave that one a miss as well.
So it was back to the library to use the free internet (in most libraries in Oz it is free) another way we have found to save a bit of money. We stayed here a while researching Asia and Singapore as we seem destined to leave Oz early.
That evening we popped over the road to Molly Malones (yes an Irish bar) for a quiz which we were too
Who's a pretty boy??
The one on the left for sure. early for, so we left and watched tv after a quick beer.

More library. More rain. Our taxi to the airport was at 3:30. Again we only changed our tickets on the phone (so we haven't paid for changing it like they keep telling us) so again Melissa has saved us some money with her good thinking. She may be tight sometimes but she is good at it.
We will be leaving Townsville with no real memories. It seems a nice town but with nothing to do. Shame really.
At 5:00pm it was time for the flight of our lives. A little 36 seater with propellers. Neither of us had been on a plane so small, Melissa thought it was well scary and was in tears on the plane ( how embarassing), me being a bloke won't admit it. But it all turned out well in the end and we arrived in Cairns at 6:00pm and it was chucking it down here as well.
