Northern Bolivia

Greetings

Hello just a very quick blog for Northern Bolivia as we are stuck in Santiago Chile at the min waiting for a visa and have been stuck here for a while ( glad the wine is cheap)

We crossed into Bolivia from Peru at Lake Titicaca which for its size is the highest lake in the world at 3800m. The lake is stunning and has many islands scattered about it which people think remind them of the Greek islands. Lake Titicaca is famous for its indigenous people who live on floating reed islands in the middle of the lake, they have done this since Inca times when the Inca warriors drove them off the land and onto the lake.

After Titicaca we headed onto La Paz which is the capital of Bolivia and a really great city, all of the other Capital cities in South America have a European feel but La Paz has a very indigenous feel and beautiful cobbled streets. Also the local people are small, and I mean really small some of the old women don´t reach 4 foot in height even my sister Emma would feel like Gulliver in this town!!

It is the highest capital in the world at just under 4000m and walking around it is very tiring indeed. It is surrounded by snow capped peaks and really is a stunning city.

La paz is also a cracking night out and we met up with a few of the people we met on the Inca trail and headed out for a night on the town. Bolivia is South Americas poorest country and also one of the cheapest which makes a nice change as South America is actually pretty expensive place to visit.

Next up for us from Santiago is a 26 hour bus ride up to San Pedro de Atacama. From there we will hit northern Chile and southern Bolivian deserts which will be a highlight of the trip as they are scenically some of the most stunning places on Earth.

Great photos. I like the reference to Gulliver. I live in Cusco and that's exactly how I feel here. I often walk around with a scratch on my forehead from running into door frames. On a different note, when you go to southern Bolivia, you have to go to the Salar de Uyuni. I'm sure that's already on your list, but just in case it's not. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salar_De_Uyuni Have a good trip.
