My first impression of Paihia may not have been a totally accurate one. After the first 2 day here the weather turned grey and hasn’t changed since. It’s still warm, but it rains almost every other hour and the wind doesn’t stop. It’s also not rain like we’re used to on the west coast, it’s more like the air is just wet and I was fortunate enough to be in it for the whole 4 km walk to and from the supermarket. Oh well, enough griping from me because it’s not as bad as it sounds, the town is still a great little place and rain or shine, tomorrow I’m heading out to do a couple hikes.

Unfortunately I didn’t get the job at the fish and chip shop because I was not able to commit to 4 months here in Paihia (I had originally told them that I could stick it out here for 3 months, but that wasn’t quite enough). The grocery store was only hiring people who planned to be there for 6 months and could only offer 2 night shifts a week each only 4 hours long, which would not be enough to keep me here. I’m heading out to Cape Reinga on the Friday and I’m going to see how I might be able to get to Kaitaia from there as there are a few job prospects there. I’ll be passing through Whangarei on my way back down to Auckland which could also hold opportunities.

In any case, uploading photos is a bit of a pain because I do have to pay for every hour I’m on the internet in this town, and I am uploading both to this blog as well as face book (Eric Hussmann). It takes a long time to upload to both, so if you don’t see in in one place then you’ll probably see it in the other. I’ve just updated my previous post with some of the pictures from a few days ago and I will update this one with some of my pictures later today.

Expect some great (and hopefully dry) pictures of some of the hiking trails before Friday.

Talk at you all later!

Looks great
Hi Eric, looks and sounds as though all is OK. I hope you continue on till you find what you want...I know you are able to tie oyster lines :). I read Stan's posts about the close locality of aquaculture there. Just be aware that 3 months of time is 1/4 of your planned trip. Plan wisely....Stay well, healthy and keep us all posted. Love, Dad
