Hi there. On Wednesday we headed out of Lisboa for a day trip. We started this off in Cascais which is a nice resort beach town. It would definitely get packed out in summer so it was nice to be there without the crowds. We wandered along the beachfront along the town’s 3 little bays. We hired some bikes (well they were actually free so we’re not sure if this is classed as hiring) and had a nice ride along the coast to Boca do inferno “Devil’s Mouth”. After Cascais we drove along the beautiful and fairly rugged coastline to Guincho beach which is a popular surf beach. It’s probably not that impressive in Aussie terms! The next stop was Cabo do Roca, the western-most point of Europe. We gazed out from the cliff face to the Atlantic Ocean which just seemed to go on forever. Not an island in sight! The wildflowers along the drive and particularly at Cabo do Roca were really pretty.
We then headed to Sintra. There are a lot of sights to see here but unfortunately we didn’t have time for everything. We chose to go to the Park and Palace of Pena. The weather
had really closed in and the mist and light rain added to the mystery of these gardens. We had fun wandering around and coming across the various different gardens and statues. It really felt like a fairy tale place with the palace in the middle and the huge old trees, moss and vines surrounding it and it seemed like we had the gardens to ourselves. We could have spent all day there however the rain forced us out.
On the way back to Lisboa we again avoided all the toll roads so drove through some lovely towns with very narrow old streets! When we got back we went on a Peri Peri (piri piri) hunt! We caught the metro into town and followed our noses to an excellent restaurant where we induldged in delicious traditional grilled cod, chicken and port of course! You have to be careful eating here in Portugal as soon as you sit down they bring out bread, olives, cheese and sometimes salad which if you eat they charge you for! Luckily we were aware of this so have been sending it back rather than paying for it.

Ah, Such a Paradise
I lived in Bairro do Rosario, Cascais in the '70s. I'd almost forgotten all the verdure and beauty.
