Where do I begin!!!

This is what Wikipedia says. If you want more information go to the web site.

www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nyepi

Observed from 6 a.m. until 6 a.m. the next morning, Nyepi is a day reserved for self-reflection and as such, anything that might interfere with that purpose is restricted. The main restrictions are: no lighting fires (and lights must be kept low); no working; no entertainment or pleasure; no traveling; and for some, no talking or eating at all. The effect of these prohibitions is that Bali’s usually bustling streets and roads are empty, there is little or no noise from TVs and radios, and few signs of activity are seen even inside homes. The only people to be seen outdoors are the Pecalang, traditional security men who patrol the streets to ensure the prohibitions are being followed.

But the day before that all the Ogoh Ogohs are paraded and what a sight that is!
Once again I have taken from Wikipedia…

Devout Hindu Balinese villages usually make ogoh-ogoh, demonic statues made of bamboo and paper symbolizing negative elements or malevolent spirits. After the ogoh-ogoh have been paraded around the village, the Ngrupuk ritual takes place, which involves burning the ogoh-ogoh.

I think this has explained things as well if not better than I could, but look at the photos for a better idea. Click on them to enlarge them, it’s worth it.

Believe me it is an experience of a life time, and I have had a few of them - experiences, probably life times too! Why so many people say don’t go to Bali during Nyepi is crazy. Sure, if you just intend to go out for a nice meal during this time you will be disappointed, but if you get involved with the parade of ogoh ogoh the day before you will think that you’re in Rio. Wow, what a parade. I can’t believe that I have been to Bali dozens of times and have never had this experience before.

It was like Christmas and New Year in one. Go Bali!

Mike and Isobel?
Buffy...what a wonderful experience! But although you waxed lyrical about the delights of Bali, Nyepi, the Ogoh-Ogohs and Bali's beautiful people you have forgotten a couple of things already. First the Festival fringe is on, starring V8 snarling motor cars, electronically illuminated North terrace, culminating in...wait for it....next saturday's State election starring media Mike and Isobel Redmond. Now that puts it all into perspective doesn't it! When you look at the Ogoh Ogohs, Mike, Isobel and Rob Lucas I KNOW which is more scary! Our love tou you you lucky lady xx The fat and crippled controller and the lovely Ming.
