I’ve arrived in Accra safe and sound. Our flight was very long (24 hours total), but with six of us we kept one another sufficiently entertained. Thanks to a clever nursing intervention (aka zopiclone) we were mostly able to sleep. We were met at the airport by Bev O’Brien, our tutor, and were at the International Student Hostel (ISH) by 2200. I am rooming with a Ghanaian student by the name of Jacoba, who was been very welcoming. The hostel itself is great - a mix of international students from all over the world as well as local students. I’ll be sure to post some pictures shortly. The locals have been very kind to us - everyone we’ve spoken to tells us “we’re welcome” in Ghana. We’ve gotten a lot of advice as “Obrunis” (white people). The weather is hot and humid, which makes showering seem futile and keeps our white nursing dresses filthy. However, the rooms have fans and sleeping hasn’t been too bad thus far. Just down the street there is a market which carries food and important goods (toilet paper is a hot commodity). My favorite so far is a breakfast sandwich with a fried egg, onions and tomatoes. Not very authentic, but it hasn’t made anyone sick. It costs 50 pesewas (half a cedi or about 35 cents). We’ll likely be getting most of our meals at the market, as it’s less expensive than buying packaged food. Tomorrow we begin our clinical placements at Military 37, one of the large hospitals in Accra. More to follow later in the week… Hope all is well back home.

Hey Kate, Sounds great! I'm glad to hear your roommate is nice, even if you're rooming with someone you don't know. I'm sure you're going to meet so many interesting people, if there's lots of other international students there! I look forward to pictures, and good luck on starting work. Love you, Lib
