I was cleaning Swamiji’s veranda this afternoon. He is expected here tomorrow (with a group of 50 or so foreigners who will go to the first bath of Kumbh Mela), so you could say that it is GAME ON. It was a particularly auspicious time to be looking out from the veranda on the top floor of the White House, taking in the atmosphere of the whole Ashram. Feelings of anticipation, excitement and tension hung in the air. Outside: buildings, walls, signs, paths, carpets and windows were all being cleaned. Inside: rooms were being swept and tidied. Minds were preparing, contemplating and reflecting. On the surface there was a sense of urgency as one of the Swamis cycled between his duties, followed by a cloud of dust. In contrast, innerly, I was enjoying a much slower pace, being absorbed in selfless action, watering the new railing cement project and moving some more of the dust from one balcony to another!

Somehow I’m making more time for the yoga texts and yoga philosophy now that I’m on summer University break. Quoting from the Bhagavad Gita: A person who is steadfast in yoga knows things as they are. He/She thinks that “I am not doing anything, even while I see, hear, touch, smell, eat, walk, sleep, breathe, talk, evaluate, accept things and even blink my eyes… it is not me who does all this but the senses that are doing these. O Arjuna, among the pious, four kinds of men worship me: the distressed, those who desire wealth, the inquisitive and those seeking knowledge of the absolute truth." The massive cleaning action and the contemplation continues!

This week I am asking my students to contemplate the question "who am i?" . I am a spiritual being on a human journey. Students are very keen on identifying themselves as their thoughts, ther personality and their ego. I have never led this kind of discussion before, and I am trying to prompt them towards the realization that they are not their thoughts, but the witenss beyond them. That through going beyond their thoughts they will gain an understanding of their true selves and deepen their awareness of the absolute truth. THANK YOU YASHODA, you are a shining light on this journey. Hari OM .. xx Gayatri
