After last nights foot massage at the Night Market we were strolling homeward when we found ourselves in a thick crowd which included many police and dark-clad security guys talking into their sleeves. Turns out that our preambulation and the Queen of Thailand's limousine were on a collision course. I have never seen with my own eyes a Queen of anywhere, so I told Dan, we were staying put until I clap my eyes on her highness. Queens don't just traipse across our path every day you know. Curiously, our front-row view somehow became clogged with Thais who just somehow slipped in front of us and stole our view (Well... my view. Dan is six inches taller than everyone in the croud). Unfortunately Dan's attempt to take a photo was quashed with a "No Photos!" order from a uniformed cop.
After much fanfare, motorcading, etc. the Queen pulled up in her limousine, stepped out to accept the huge bouquets of flowers presented by various dignitaries kneeling curbside on the red carpet, a modest and well-behaved cheer went up from the crowd, and with a polite and very royal wave, Her Majesty was whisked into the lobby of her hotel... The Royal
Princess Hotel, of course! Naturally the Thais, who know better, were snapping away with their cameras and doubtless got many good shots. We did not, so here is a file photo of her majesty. Just imagine seeing her from 75 feet away, dressed in a cream pants suit that shone in the night dusk, turning and waving from the entrance to her hotel. There. It's just like you were there with us!
A couple of days ago, we were invited to a barbecue thrown by an English expatriate, where we had the most amazing gorge-a-rama, with double cheese burgers, bangers, kabobs, pork loin, salad, baked potatoes, fresh baked bread and of course free-flowing libations. We stuffed ourselves, and to celebrate Dan's return to eating, he topped it all off with a double ice-cream sundae. Incredibly, I lost a kilo that day (!) Atkins diet - I may have to give you a whirl!
Last night we booked our last week in a wonderful guest house in Chiang Mai, for when our friends arrive. (Since our current digs have just began a large swimming pool/construction project in our back yard, ie NOISY)...This new place is awesome! We met a couple of
The Moat at Night
Chiang Mai's Parapet and Moat, circa 1345 (The fountains and lights are newer) travelers there and spent a few happy hours exchanging stories with them.
Our fitness program has been going well; we have both lost weight, although Dan's oral surgery and resulting inability to eat for days has pushed his weight loss far ahead of mine. We both work out 2-4 hours a day and I have learned to swim!
I often marvel over the beauty I find here, and wish my Mom could see it. I hope she can.
