The Whole Journey

That's It ThenThat's It ThenThat's It Then

Just Christmas to look forward to now.
Day 13: 12th October 2009
11:50 PM

The final day started in exactly the same way as the first, with a burst of music from my alarm clock at 4.00AM, although this time it was the sound of Mansun‘s ‘Take it Easy Chicken‘ rather than the tuneless noise of my clock radio on Day 1. Oddly enough, two weeks of fresh air and refreshing walks has given me a sufficient burst of energy to wake up at this time and be able to get straight out of bed feeling relatively invigorated. John and Lyndsey must feel the same, Lyndsey having already risen half an hour before me (convinced, without a watch or the alarm on her phone, that we had overslept) and John, the man who could sleep competitively, getting up at the same time as me. No doubt a few days back in England and everything will be back to normal.

Not much excitement came from the journey home; the bus picked us up at 4.50 as promised, the internet check-in saved us some queing time at the airport (it seems that all flights from Iceland must leave around the same time in the morning, going on

how busy it was now compared to the ghost town like arrival) and the flight left just after 8.00. The weather was good, the winds in our favour and so by 11.15 UK time we were back on Mancunian soil, where John‘s dad was waiting to take us home (always in search of a bargain, I had taken the cheapest flights by flying out from Gatwick and flying back to Manchester).

It is normal, at the end of a holiday, particularly a backpacking one, to be ready to get home, even though this is normally a brief feeling replaced by a want to go away again a few days later. This time it was different though, and I think the others felt the same. Whether it was the place, the people, the charm or whatever, I genuinely had no desire to leave. In twelve short days, we have seen so much, but only really touched a fraction of the island. I have a feeling we‘ll be back.

I couldn't really end it without another picture of John falling asleep on a bus.
