the principals and english teachers
group pic! on the left (in the witch costume) is Delia, one of the vice principals and on the right (with the cowboy hat) is Joanne, our principal. on the far right side is Holly, the other vice principal. the other people in the picture are the English teachers (L-R: me, genelle, aaron, alex, john). This entry comes a little late since Halloween is long over, but better late than never!
Halloween was surprisingly a huge celebration at our school and around the city. We devoted one whole week to Halloween and taught the kids Halloween words, songs, and traditions. The school had 3 huge boxes of decorations. So the English teachers teamed up to make the lobby ghoulish and spooky...skeletons, ghosts, witches, gargoyles, giant fuzzy spiders....the works!
One of my students was so scared of the halloween decor that he began crying hysterically and refused to walk through the lobby (and he didn't show up on Friday for our Halloween party probably because he was too afraid...poor Gordon). Actually, most of the kids were not scared of the decorations. They kept on telling me it was beautiful!
On Friday (Oct.30) everyone dressed up! It was fun! My roommate and I both decided to be Hello Kitty. The night before, my arts and crafts skills came in hand. 😊 A headband (borrowed from my roommate), a sheet of white paper, scissors, tape, and some pink fabric material I had saved from a bouqet of flowers = home-made Hello Kitty ears with a pretty
pink bow. Actually some people at work thought we had bought the ears from a store....yes, they were that awesome! haha
Genelle got some white face paint. So we woke up extra early to put on our costumes and face-paint. Since I had no bright-coloured dresses...Genelle kindly lent me one of her dresses! Her dress actually fit me pretty well. I like that dress...I might try to get it custom-made at the fabric market.
Anyhow...before leaving the house, I looked in the mirror and said that the face paint made us look very scary....which is totally not Hello Kitty-like. Even though we had just spent 30 mins. on applying the paint, I said we should probably take it off.....
I was right...cuz on the way to the school, we bumped into a little girl from our school & she said we looked scary. hahaha So once Genelle and I got into the school, we rushed into the washroom to scrub off the white face paint. In the end, we just kept our faces simple with black whiskers and a yellow nose (which the kids thought was funny when they saw me).
All the English teachers lined up
becoming fobby? ehehe
Funny how all the English teachers have the classic fobby peace-sign pose going on and the Chinese principals are just posing normally. hehee outside by the gate to greet the children, with Halloween music playing in the background. The kids showed up in amazing costumes (some were home-made costumes too)! The morning was quite hectic....each English teacher came up with a Halloween game and the classes rotated from room to room. We gave out little Halloween prizes and stickers. The game I came up with "Pin the Nose on the Pumpkin". It was pretty crazy and tiring (for the teachers), but the kids had fun so it was worth it!
For Halloween night, my friends and I went out in our costumes. I had my Hello Kitty ears and face on and people were staring...especially because there was no sign of Halloween celebrations going on in our area. People probably thought we were strange.
But the area where we had dinner--around Hongmei Lu and Yannan Lu area--I saw a party supply store with everything Halloween. And I saw lots of people in costume & some were with their little children...on their way to go trick-or-treating. It was cool!
And we went to a couple places after dinner and there was some pretty big Halloween partying going on....
I haven't dressed
Pin the Nose on the Pumpkin
My class playing Pin the Nose on the Pumpkin. I was able to make the pumpkin thanks to Sunny (one of the Chinese teachers) who lent me the special black cloth so I could create velcro pieces to stick on to it. The game was a success! up for Halloween in quite a while, so it was pretty fun to do it this year!
p.s. From these pictures...if you can tell what's changed about me...I'll send you a gold star! 😊 (Just to let you know, I don't want to post pictures of my students for their privacy...I know I mention my kids and how they are sooo cute, but the best I can do is post ones where you can't see their faces)
