Drum, tamborine, berimbaus (stringed instrument) and a double gond.
Today, we went to check out a Capoeira school around the neighborhood. They teach capoeira to kids and teenagers so they can learn and have something productive. Capoeira is Afro-Brazilian, defined as a game, it's a mixture of dance, fighting, and thinking.
Today was also the first day of culture class. I live in a bubble, says the teacher. The EAP students live around the neighborhood of the school (ACBEU), which is upper-middle class. Salvador has 14% unemployment rate. And Salvador is the 3rd biggest city in Brazil and has the biggest black population, so this place is a cultural center in Brazil. There is supposed to be lots of poor people on the outskirts, since wealthier people live by the coast.

My couch surfing host in Denmark was taking capoeira classes! It seems really cool. Are you going to try it out? hehe.

Capoeira
Do you remember for awhile in the Oakland Public School that had programs of which Capoeira was part. It is fascinating combination of skills. The kids who took the classes loved it and the performances were strong but had a lot of grace. It sounds as though you are right in the thick of things!

Capeira in OPS
I don't remember... but I read a paper that said there was a program in East Oakland starting in the 70's. My cousin who is three years older than me took Capoeira class and got to a yellow belt. I believe she learned it through a Oakland school program.
