We have a place to live!! We moved into the backpacker's (hostel) Tuesday afternooon, and found a plce that evening - right next door! It's the cutest place ever - clean, fully furnished, good price, TV/phone included, in between town and the university, and will soon be eqipped with INTERNET! Hooray! It's switching ownership right now, so we won't be able to move in until March 3rd. Until then, we'll be staying in the hostel next door, going to the beach this weekend, then possibly staying with some friends or moving into a place cheaper than the hostel next week. Erin and I will be sharing a room, then we're also living with two other AustraLearn students - Mary and Esther (also sharing a room), and John, a guy from VMI. They're all great people, and they know how to cook cheaply!
Yesterday Erin and I explored downtown. We walked there - took about 30 minutes. We ate at a great burger place, then found the bus station and the Information center. We visited the Warehouse - New Zealand's version of Walmart, then took the bus back to the hostel. For dinner one of the guy's from the hostel took a bike to the grocery store and got veggies, chicken, and rice to make stir-fry. The 3 of us split it - yum! There's a Kiwi (New Zealander) student named Patrick who's also looking for a place to live, and staying at the hostel. He's been a great resource to tell us about all the fun kiwi language. He was surprised that we don't say "mates" for friends, and he says "sweet as" for cool/awesome/sweet. "College" means high school, so people say "uni," "varsity," or just university to mean university.
I'm having a great time - really looking forward to getting out of Hamilton and going to learn how to surf! Haha, there should be some funny stories from that. Classes start next week - but it's ok because I have the easiest schedule in the world! Hopefully the classes will be interesting but not extremely demanding.
That's it for now - hope you all are doing well; Furman students - good luck on exams!
