Ferry Ride

I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel's sake. The great affair is to move. - Robert Louis Stevenson

July 11, 2009, Saturday, Copenhagen, Denmark, Absalon, Campground
Some people never learn from their mistakes, so we are off on our bikes again to the city. Biking is a serious mode of transportation in Denmark. There are bike lanes, vehicle lanes, pedestrian lanes and lights for each and every lane. Some trikes are equipped for children, babies, dogs, groceries, large packages and mail delivery. The Copenhagen Post estimates that there may be more bikes than Danes in Denmark.
The weather promises to be a bit better today and we will follow a bike tour of Copenhagen. The ride began at the Radhus, a busy spot downtown and then winds down to the University of Copenhagen’s lush Botanical Gardens. Trinity Church and the Round Tower were our next stops. After visiting an outdoor market we continued onto Fredericburg Church and then the Amalienborg Palace, home of the queen and her family.
Between getting lost and doubling -back we are tired and hungry. Time to stop for a late, late lunch before we bike “home”.
In the evening, after a shower, we enjoy an English video and follow the Harry Potter saga.

July 12, 2009, Sunday Copenhagen, Denmark, Absalon CG south to the ferry and across the Baltic Sea to N. Germany, Muritz National Park.
Today is a driving day with a two hour break on the ferry to Rostock, Germany.

July 13, 2009, Monday, Muritz NP to camping Sanssouci, Potsdam, Germany.

The National Parks in Germany are not like the national parks in the States, after getting lost in our attempt to find the main road, we eventually found our way to Potsdam.
Camping Sanssouci is on the Templiner See and is very popular with German Families. By 11 AM we had the RV settled in and were on our bikes ready to explore Potsdam. We are at the far end of town, so it takes some pedaling to get to town.
After Bob found his coffee shop, we located Sanssouci Park. The Prussian King Frederick II chose this range of hills for his permanent summer residence. Sanssouci Park is an ensemble of palaces and gardens. It includes palaces, a church, fountains, lovely gardens, a windmill, Peale Obelisk, English Bath, China House… it just goes on and on. Glad we have the bikes! It is also home for Potsdam University so it attracts a mix of co-eds, tourists, and locals. We toured yet another, palace…Bob loves this stuff?
