We were sleeping sooooo good last night up here in Marquette when we were abruptly awaken by the rocking of the motor home. Oh my goodness, I thought it was a tornado ! I said to myself, we’re in Michigan not Kansas, what the heck is going on. Tim got up to investigate and happily reported to me that it was just the winds coming in off of Lake Superior and boy was I glad. I did not want to die in a motor home, in a Wal-Mart parking lot, with a bunch of strangers, hundreds of miles away from home. Luckily the wind calmed and we were able to doze off until we heard the annoying sound of Tim’s alarm going off. It was so cold at a bitter 48 degrees, and I was so warm, oh my gosh I didn’t want to get up this morning. On top of that, Tim decided he wanted some coffee, so I had to wake up to the smell of a hot pot of coffee brewing. This smell makes me nauseous but it was either open the door and freeze my buns off or put my big girl panties on and suck it
up. Well, that’s what I did, I sucked it up for my man. Once again, the things we women will do to make our man happy. I’m not exactly sure what this world is coming to but the next thing I know I looked over at Tim on the computer and he’s had that little grin on his face. I don’t believe it !! My husband, the one who doesn’t particularly like to socialize, has made himself a Facebook page !!! I’m sorry but I just started crackin’ up ! He’s always teasing me and making fun of me and my virtual life and there he goes joining all of us on the most extensive networking system in the world. Shoot, by the time I had my breakfast and sat down to show him the ropes, he already had three friends ! I think he’ll get the hang of it just fine, but I hope not too well. You know all kinds of crazy things happen when people get on the internet ! I’m not worried too much though cause my baby knows who butters his bread and I’m pretty sure he’s happy. Well, he finished up working on his
new Facebook page while I washed the breakfast dishes, swept the floor and took out the trash. We didn’t really have a lot planned for the day, just to drive as far as we could and hopefully make it all the way to the Minnesota state line. There were a couple of things in the book that were on our route so we made our way over to a town called Houghton to check out the Keweehaw Copper Mining Heritage. Houghton is connected to another small town named Hancock and this is where the copper rush began back in 1840. The two towns are actually connected by the Portage Lake Lift Bridge which is the heaviest lift bridge in the world. It was really neat to see and of course we had to drive across it so Tim could investigate the construction of it and try to figure out how it works. We drove from Houghton to Hancock and then back to Houghton exploring the copper mines and learning all about the history of the Copper Rush. It was getting on into the afternoon and there was a restaurant in town that the book had recommended so we made our
way to Suomi Home Bakery in hopes of trying the pannukakku, a Finnish dish. Well our hopes were dashed because just as we were walking in the door at 3:00 p.m. they were closing for the day. We were so upset, I even told the lady that it was in the book and we just had to eat there. She had already turned everything off and cleaned the kitchen so we left and went over to The Library to see what they had to offer. She recommended The Library as did Tim’s new friend he met on the street just a few minutes later. He’s just getting to be such a little social butterfly ! We ran into to a local on the street and Tim just struck up a conversation with him and about twenty minutes later we finally made it to The Library for a late lunch. Our friendly little waitress sat us right by the window overlooking the lake and it was so cozy and kinda romantic too. We were starving by this point so we devoured our lunch and then made our way back to the RV. They were doing a lot of construction in downtown
and we couldn’t do much there so we decided to head on over towards Wisconsin and drive the rest of the North Shore of Lake Superior. It was beautiful but I just started laughing when Tim said “Yes Candy, it is beautiful but it looks exactly like the other 300 miles of it we’ve already seen !”. This lake is absolutely humongous and it does have a lot of gorgeous scenery but I think Tim was over it and was ready to move on to something new. Luckily for him we were almost out of Wisconsin and about to cross over into Minnesota. We were making our way across America in a record amount of time. It seems like every time I turn around we’re in a different state. As of now, I only have five more to go and that will make all 50 for me and two of those are Alaska and Hawaii. YAY ! Tim is already at 48 and only needs to take his wonderful wife to Alaska and Hawaii to make all 50 for him. I’m thinking an Alaskan cruise next spring and then a couple of weeks in Hawaii next summer would be perfect.
Tim and his new friend !
Don't you just love the look on Tim's face ? We are some traveling fools I tell ya, that is a whole lot of ground covered and that doesn’t even count all the provinces in Canada. I’ll have to count them later and get back with you on a total. Well, we made it all the way to Brainerd, Minnesota (it’s in the book) and settled into the local Wal-mart, surprise, surprise. I was quite impressed though because this one was actually built next to a lake and it was really nice. Tim put the jacks down and leveled us up and then we opened the window so we could listen to the frogs and crickets chirping in the night. We both logged onto our Facebook pages to check for messages and then we were off to sleep. We’re headed over to Fargo, North Dakota tomorrow to check it out but until then, sleep tight and don’t let the bed bugs bite !
