Ferry Disaster!

Today we had to leave Santorini! I wish I had more time here to rent four-wheelers again and go see more beaches, but we’re headed to Turkey tonight, so I had to get back. We got to the port around 10:45 am for our 11:45 am ferry. This was going to get us back to Piraeus at 4:40 pm, giving us about 1 hour 20 minutes to get half a mile to the cruise ship terminal by 6 pm, which is mandatory on-ship time.

Around 11 am, we found out that our ferry would be late. The way it works on our ship is that for every 15 minutes a student is late, they receive 3 hours of dock time in the next port, aka they have to stay on the boat and cannot get off. We ended up not departing Santorini until 2 pm! This made us at least an hour late, giving us at least 12 hours of dock time. There were about 15 students total in Santorini so we called the ship and told them what was going on.

Once on the ferry, it stopped at another island to pick up more people. About 30 more students got on, making us about 45 strong getting back to the ship late. After a mad rush to get off the ferry in Piraeus, we got back to our ship an hour and a half late! The reason this is such a big deal is because immigration needs to clear the boat and they can’t do so until everyone is onboard. The longer immigration has to wait, the higher the risk if of being fined. We were all eager to find out how much dock time we were going to be issued, but the administration was too mad to talk about it and decided to sleep on it and talk in the morning. We have one day of classes before Turkey, so I’m not letting the dock time upset me. Also, I have two exams tomorrow so I guess I should go now and focus on that!
