...in Berlin, that is.

Although there is a week left in the seminar, our Berlin component has come to an end. As you can see from the series of photos from our final seminar session at the House of Democracy and Human Rights, it's probably a good thing we are moving on. We've gotten a little loopy. In a good way. (By the way, we were conducting "silent" dialogues with various figures, real and imagined, from East-Central Europe; the time September 1989. I was lucky enough to be the GDR dissident mom!)

I think all of us have grown very attached to Berlin, so we have been trying to make the most of our final moments in the city. From seeking out the oldest Berliner pub (open since 1621) to try the house specialty, pickled pork knuckle (no hiding that it is pig you are eating!), to checking out the shisha place next to our apartment building. Today, I poked around the farmer's market on Kollwitzplatz, which I must say puts even the Dupont Circle version to shame - amazing breads, cheeses, cured meats, wines, flowers, crafts, etc. My companions and I ate our way through the market - lunch for me was a weisswurt with a pretzel and sweet mustard, washed down with fresh red beet/apple/carrot juice. We rounded out the caloric nightmare with apfelstreudal at my favorite "Alpine" shop. Others found their own bliss.

(I also went to the Stasi prison of Hohenschönhausen, but that's a topic for another entry. )

Tomorrow we head to Leipzig, to see where the first major demonstrations of 1989 began in the GDR. So on to Saxony!
