Your true traveller finds boredom rather agreeable than painful. It is the symbol of his liberty - his excessive freedom. He accepts his boredom, when it comes, not merely philosophically, but almost with pleasure. - Aldous Huxley
June 27, 2009, Saturday, Gol, Norway to Hardangervidda N.P., to Voring foss (waterfall) to the ferry at Brimnes to Bruravik then onto Voss, then to Tvinde Campground, outside Voss, Norway.
With the summer night bright as daylight all the night long, even with an eye mask, we both were awake at 12, 2, and finally 5AM. We left Gol, and before too long we were in Hardangervidda, NP, it is like a “moonscape” no trees, we are up too high, shallow lakes, surrounded by lovely mountains, still snow covered, glaciers, lots of huge boulders, and a very long narrow road. We passed several brave campers “hunkered” down is this never-never land, hiking and exploring. Actually it looked like a neat place to camp for a day or two.
Voringfoss, (we discovered floss must mean waterfalls) was out next stop along E7, a lovely waterfall left by glaciers long, long ago having carved a fjord, just lovely scenery.
On the way to Voss, the road ends and a ferry appears. So on we go, across the Hardangerfjorden from Brimnes to Bruravik.
We continued on to the busy town of Voss. This weekend is an “extreme
sport event” and the campground is “full up”. So after a stop at the visitor’s center, we continued to Tvinde Campground, seems we lucked out, this is one magnificent waterfall park and we are camped right next to it, so with the shade of the mountain and the breeze from the falls…we are happy. “One door closes, another door opens.”
Tomorrow, we have tickets for “Norway in a Nutshell” tour. Originally, we resisted but this tour seems to make sense for us. We will see.
June 28, 2009, Sunday, Tvinde CG, back to Voss and the Railroad/Bus Station, Norway.
“Norway in a Nutshell” is so advertised, we decided to give it a try. We drove back to Voss and at the train station got the train to Myrdal. It was about an hour ride, and scenery continues to “WOW” us.
At Myrdal, we changed trains for the very steep climb down to Flam. It is the steepest gauge railway line in Northern Europe, about a one hour journey. A word about “Trolls” , whenever there is something is difficult to explain, the Norwegians use the troll as the scapegoat. Trolls are everywhere in tourist shop,
in gardens, and homes. One stop on the train had a beautiful waterfall, and the lovely “Hildra” the troll, singing dancing and trying to entice travelers to follow her into the mountains. Kinda like “The devil made me do it”.
Flam is a village in the Aurlandsfjord, which is a tributary of the Sognefjord. In Flam we got aboard Lady Elizabeth and began the fjord boat trip section of this trip, for about two hours. We watched what the Ice Age created 2/3 million years ago, the scenery was incredibly beautiful.
The final connect is at Gudvangen, and at the port is a bus is ready to return us to Voss. “Norway in a Nutshell” was all well scripted, very organized and efficient…but a bit stilted for us; we still like doing it our own way.
Back at Voss, and we decided to return to the Waterfall Campground, Tvinde, it was quite pleasant.
