Alright, so I have no good reason for this being my first entry. I could tell you everytime I went to Canoa (a 30 minute walk down the beach) either the power went out or the internet shut down. I could tell you it is because I have been such an attentive Spanish student, busy filling my brain with important information. I could say it is because I have been so busy learing to surf while working on my tan. I could say it is because drinking big cold beers while watching the sun set over the ocean is a much nicer way to spend my time than in the internet cafe. I could say it is because i have been spending all my time with my new best friends, Caroline (4 years) and Rosalea (9 years). I could tell you all of these things because they are true.

So here I am, a month after arriving in Ecuador, writing my first entry. Matt has made his way to Santiago and I am going to spend another month or two finding my way through the countries of Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia by bus. No plan at all. I am going to wake up in the morning and decide where and how I feel like spending that day. Quite a big change from my life in Bozeman where I left behind a busy schedule of classes, waitressing and skiing with a chaotic social scene to fill the few spaces there were left.

The past month has looked something like this. 8.30 b-fast, 2 hours of Spanish school with my instructor, Heime who is about 70 years old and doesn´t speak a lick of English. Maybe a surf session in the morning before lunch, another 2 hours of spanish in the afternoon followed my another trip in to the ocean, beers while watching the sunset, dinner and a lot of chillin´afterwards. It´s a pretty rough life , really. This may be one of my last few days in Canoa, or it may not. As both my Spanish teacher and my surf teacher keep reiterating to me when become frustrated with my progress, poco a poco, Malia. Little by little. Pictures will some soon.

Mancora...
Hey, we have never met, but I used to be in a rock and roll band with your boyfriend, maybe you have heard of it, um, Just Bob? Anywho. Please spend sometime if you get a chance in Mancora. At the south end of town is Punta Ballenas, a hotel and a point break. I wouldn't suggest surfing it. But I would suggest to check out the hotel. A guy by the name of "Harry" lives there. Spend some time with the guy and listen to his stories over a Pilsen. Ask about a german hermit named Heidi. Spend an hour or two and hang with her. Both Harry and Heidy speak excellent English. Great surf in Mancora. That is the last of the warm water as well as you head south. Safe Regards, jibnationforabettercivilazation
