Optical illusions and tasty salt tables

Another quick update...We´ve just arrived in Iguazu, Argentina and are waiting for my uncle Rod to arrive, so this one will be brief. Our next stop in Bolivia was Salar de Uyuni to do a three day tour of the salt flats and surrounding areas.

Day 1 involved a trip to a ´train cemetery´just outside Uyuni, a visit to a hotel made entirely out of salt, climbing up a coral island in the middle of the desert which was covered in massive cacti and, lastly, an overnight stay in the small town of San Juan where we visited a 500 year old cemetery where people´s remains were displayed in small caves.

Day 2 took us to an active volcano and large volcanic rocks, as well as various lagoons in the area, such as Laguna Colorada, where we saw about 40-50 flamingoes (there are usually hundreds on the lake, but at this time of the year they all migrate to warmer climates - around Uyuni is all between 3000-5000 metres above sea level and is pretty damn cold!).

Day 3 we were up at 5.00 to see some nearby geysers and watch the sunrise before heading off to see another very beautiful lagoon - Laguna Verde - which is green due to its copper minerals.

After that we headed to the town of Tupiza (201kms or about 6 hours away from Uyuni), a very wild western area. The other lasses headed out for a day of horse riding within the setting of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, but I (being the jockey that I am) decided to have the day off and just wander around the town - was nice to have a day to myself without the other clowns, especially that Renee Tuck, who I am thoroughly sick of!

Sorry, that was fairly uninspiring writing, but I am slightly tired after a 22 hour bus ride and a rather large night prior to that, a belated celebration in honour of Miss Renee´s birthday. And, before the others yell at me, please let it be noted that certain events have been left out of this blog. I am saving them for my last blog, which will contain a section entitled ´Funniest Events of South America.´

Anyway, Rod´s here so I best be off.

Word out
