22nd May, 2009 Travel to Cheyenne, Wyoming
Departed Greeley today and headed up SH85, at the Colorado / Wyoming boarder we stopped at the "Terry Bison Ranch" a 5000 acre Bison ranch and tourist attraction with 2500 Bison. This ranch is 1/3 in Wyoming, 2/3 in Colorado, apparently a tax nightmare. Hopped aboard the Train (??????) and went for a ride on part of the ranch stopping to see the Bison fed. They are huge, the male of the group we observed was 2600 lb, only one mating male per herd otherwise they fight to the death, all other males are sterilised, no threat then.
The Bison today are 1 ft shorter and 500lb lighter than the original Bison as they were nearly wiped out, from 600,000 to just 325, a breeding programme was put in place and now there are 350,000 across USA.
Lunch at the restaurant and of course we had Bison burger which is a very lean meat - how was it, pretty ho hum, dry and over cooked for our liking, but still a nice meal.
On the property they also have other animals, a trout lake (pond) which has 500 12 - 16 inch trout
available for fishing at a cost of $19.95 US and you can take 3 fish. And you can shoot a Bison for the small sum of $1450 US plus you are responsible for cleaning up the carcass and removal, it would be like shooting a target, they just stand there.
"Terry Ranch" is well worth a visit.
Off to Cheyenne, into the camp and then down town to have a look around, a bit of a walk and then a concert, pretty good untill the wind suddenly came up (I had been getting sun burnt before it arrived), turned cold, hail storm, thunder lightning wow what a change, went from about 70 degrees to 53 in 2 mins. Real historic cowboy town and some of the locals turned up to the concert in their cowboy hats, boots and spurs, one with his rifle and handgun, another with a bloody great sheath knife on his belt.
While we were wondering around we went into a pawn shop, you could buy any sort of gun, rifle, pistol or auto weapon you liked - no wonder they have problems over here.
Anyway a great day, enjoy the photo's.
