Pelican flight
What a cheeky chap! Day 22
Another huge birthday shout out today to our very special friend JAMES who is SEVEN today. Let’s hear it everybody …. Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday dear James, Happy Birthday to you! Hope you have a great day and there will be a special birthday postcard on it’s way!
We sat in the caravan last night listening to the sea and watching TV whilst writing up the blog! We were very civilised with our wine, cheese and biscuits!! This is no ordinary Oz cheese, this is Castello brie!!! We stole it from the Adams fridge before we left!
We were so slow getting out of bed this morning, talk about a lazy start to our 2nd day of adventure! A quick shower and then we were off to do a bit of exploring. We thought we’d just walk out the door and see what looked good! We spotted a group of Pelicans being fed by a fisherman, they’re fantastic birds, so we stayed to watch them for a while. The weather is really good, it’s dry, bright and when you’re in the sun it’s actually really warm. We wander across the
pier heading towards the ocean where we find we can do a 4.2 km return walk to ‘the entrance’. Off we go! The walk takes us along the beach and then through woodland and then up to look over the ocean. It’s a walk which must be really popular in the summer months but is quite quiet today although we do see other people who tell us to keep going as it’s worth it when we get to the other end! Lakes Entrance was originally called Cunninghame, and in 1865 the Gippsland Times predicted, ‘the township at Lakes Entrance will become the favourite summer resort of Victoria’. The present entrance between the Gippsland Lakes and the sea was a replacement for a natural entrance which wasn’t satisfactory for shipping and was often completely closed over. Despite the threat of the sea closing the manufactured bar, as yet it never has and Lakes Entrance has a thriving fishing industry and is a huge tourist attraction.
One walk leads to another as we return to the beach road via the boardwalk pier. We’re heading towards Jemmy’s Point lookout and the Tourist Information place. En-route we try out the golden arches free
WiFi and see if it’s worldwide! We’ve got Darryl’s archos with us and it’s not long before we’re laughing at the messages and comments we’ve had on the travelblog and I’m blocking our email account because I’ve forgotten the password! Whoops! Hopefully before the end of this I’ll have sorted that out! Anyway, top marks to McDonalds and their free WiFi! It’s slow but it’s free and I’m sure it will come in handy during our trip! Whilst we’re there a traveller chap comes in for a coffee. He’s got what looks like a recycling barrel on top of a set of sack tracks with a box on top of that which has a little dog in it! I’m desperate to take a photo but think I probably shouldn’t although he’s chatting to a couple of people outside and seems really friendly so he probably wouldn’t have minded at all. He’s really got Darryl intrigued especially with the dog in a box thing. Maybe we’ll see him further on during our travels although it looks like he’s on foot so perhaps not.
We wander on along to the Tourist Info place and purchase some postcards, the first bundle of
our trip! Then we head off up to Jemmy’s Point lookout which gives us a great view over Lakes Entrance. It’s a lovely place and there’s quite a bit to do here with all the cruises available, boats to hire, fishing and plenty of walks. There’s also the start of 90 mile beach quite close but let’s face it, we’re not going to be short of beaches to walk along in the coming months so we give that a miss! There’s a few Japanese tourists up at the lookout but I can give them a run for their money in terms of how many photo’s I’m prone to take!!! It’s getting a bit chilly now and the sun is going down so we head back to town and to the local Safeway to get something for dinner. Darryl fancies using the camp BBQ (we do have our own but for the sake of getting it out using theirs is much easier and cleaner!) so we buy up some salad and a couple of pork chops plus something for tea tomorrow (I won’t ruin the surprise!).
Dinner is glorious, just as gourmet as we’ve been used to!! Then it’s time
to wash up in the camp kitchen but nobody’s there to chat to tonight. Now it’s just a question of working out the route for tomorrow, reading up a little bit on Mallacoota and then writing up the blog for today and the Beanie Kids story book for the girls!!! Grant rings to let us know the bill for the car insurance has come through so we’d better pay that tomorrow!
Wildlife count so far isn’t greatly impressive and we’re not very good at naming things but we’ve seen Pelicans, Black Swans and what we think was an Oyster Catcher of some sort! Sorry Mum, we’ll try and get better with recognising things!!
Hope everyone is well. Lots of love Darryl and Sarah

Daryls pot may shrink dramatically if all this walking continues
