Day 8 (Tuesday 28-Apr-09, JRJ)
Awake 6am for breakfast. Packed everything away and then went on a Canoe trip down the Orange River. There were about 10 canoes, each with 2 people in. Me and Nat shared, but guess who did most of the paddling? She was, however, determined that this 2 and half hour exercise would eliminate the bingo wings for the wedding, so a token effort was made. The trip down the river was beautiful and lots of fun. We saw many different birds such as herons, cormorants and the odd hawk. We even went down a few rapids on the way, both in the canoe and out. This was also the first test of our new waterproof, shockproof, freezeproof camera. It still works!
The trip ended around midday and lunch was ready for us at the end. After lunch, we headed off to our next campsite (Hobas) which was about 3 hours away, near Fish River Canyon. We got there around 4:30, left Johannes to get dinner started and took a short drive to the rim of the Canyon to experience sunset and take some pics.
By the time we got back to camp it
was dark, so we had to fumble about with our tents and equipment in order to get settled for the night. It wasn't too bad. After two days of roughing it, I'm sure we could have put the tent up with our eyes closed. After dinner, Alex told us that at this campsite there is a risk of bumping into a troop of baboons or a jackal in the middle of the night. As a result of this we held 'it' in until morning. Went to bed at 9pm.

Congratulations
Congratulations Jay, on the first entry where you haven't whinged about every single thing. If you're like that when you get to Sydney you can stay at the YMCA. Reading Natalie's entries makes me thirsty for travel and adventure. Reading your's makes me thirsty for arsenic and the slow release of death.
