Where are we going to go from Lima? Who knows...

Day 769 (08.05.09)

Arriving into Lima at a completely different terminal than we had expected, we managed to get a shister of a taxi driver who insisted that the hostel we were aiming for was full and another had closed down. We eventually got dropped off at one in the Miraflores area and booked in for the night. By now it was still early morning and we still had the majority of the day left.

Having spoken to our airline a number of times we had tried to change our flight to Mexico City (in an attempt to avoid the current bout of Swine Flu in the region) however things still werent finalised so we werent sure where we were heading or if it would cost us an arm and a leg to change our flights. A trip to the LAN office and we found that our flight had been to Mexico had been cancelled anyway. Eventually after a couple of hours with a lovely lady in the office we had our tickets confirmed and in the end had to pay no additional penalties due to the current situation there ... result! We now had tickets to Guatamala (via

With the day pushing on we had the afternoon to enjoy and walked down the smart shop-lined streets of Miraflores and popped for a trip to the cinema to see the new Star Trek film which was hugely entertaining.

Day 770 (09.05.09)

Jobs day. Lima is potentially one of our best chances to get some shopping in for a while so we took the opportunity to visit the excellent Polvos Azules shopping centre in Lima Centro, crammed to the roof with knock-off films, music, clothes, shoes, bags you name it! We managed to replace some very tired clothes in our packs and pick up a few things before leaving South America. Dull but necessary. In the evening we managed to meet up with Nick (who we'd met in Rio and Quito) for a last beer before he flew home. See you chap!

Day 771 (10.05.09)

Our flight was late at night (well early morning in all reality) so we had the morning to actually see Lima and were pleasantly suprised by the grandeur of some of the main plazas in the Old centre of Lima. As it was Peruvian Mothers Day the streets were packed with families and there was a real hustle and bustle in town.

We quick stop in Plaza San Martin to check out the statue with a llama on its head. Apparently the sculptors confused the request for a crown of flames as the Spanish word for llama and flames is the same. Not sure if the story is true but the statue is pretty cute anyway!

To celebrate the end of a fantastic few months in South America we finished our walk with a Pisco Sour in the bar at the Gran Hotel Bolivar where the famous drink was invented.

Back at the hostel we pulled ourselves together before making our way out to the airport.

Great to read some blogs on Lima!
Did you try the pisco sour in the cinema? They do this in some of Miraflores one...a movie and a pisco! Glad you enjoy your time there. Was in Lima something like 12 times between 2002 and 2007...but not a blog on it yet. Should be back there end of 2009...my stock of pisco is going way too low! Safe trip!
