I returned to Shanghai on April 8 after a marvelous week in Paris attending my son Sebastien's wedding. He and Aurelia were married on Saturday, April 4 by the mayor of the town of Les Ulis who also just happens to be Aurelia's mother!
Sebastien's "witnesses" at the Town Hall were his brothers Eric (back from Oregon) and Marc (back from Quebec City). About 160 people were there, including Sébastien's father (my ex-husband Rémi) and his wife, as well as members of the Kaiser clan; Aurelia's family; and numerous friends of the bride and groom. My father and brother were unable to attend, but my cousin Jack from Colorado came over just for the wedding, and we were all delighted to have him there.
The reception following the 5 PM ceremony took place on a barge ("peniche") docked on the Seine River close to Notre Dame Cathedral and lasted to the wee hours of the morning. The next day, Sébastien's 33rd birthday, the newly weds had 20 of us over to their new apartment in Orsay for cake and champagne. They worked this past week but left on a two-week honeymoon in Thailand today, Saturday, April 11.
As
for me, I returned to my teaching job at the French School the day after I returned and have been running around doing things ever since. Spring has come to Shanghai! The weather is warm and balmy; flowers are blooming; and the leaves of the "platane" trees lining the streets of the French Concession have opened. It's so nice to be able to open the windows and let the air come in. I've heard that soon it will be dreadfully hot and humid and we'll have to put the air conditioning on.
