Why Am I Doing This?

Welcome (or welcome back!) It is now only two weeks until I leave Esterhazy for a "sabbatical" of three months. I hope to use this time to help me determine my goals for the months and years ahead. If this is of no interest to you, and you do not wish to receive notifications of new entries as I travel (or if you are getting more than one email about each one), please let me know.

Another five weeks in Guatemala will include visiting a nature preserve, meeting local people, hiking up an active volcano with my youngest daughter and boyfriend (hers, not mine!), and then three weeks of hanging out with Cubs and Scouts as well as helping out in an orphanage while I study Spanish 25 hours a week. The people there are fantastic as making strangers feel welcome, and so I'm excited about being able to communicate with them a bit moire this time round.

My trip to Britain will include a fascinating tour of Stonehenge, now known to be over 4500 years old and so predating the Druids and the Romans. Possibly a part of an ancient site dedicated to celebrations of life and death, it is very near to Salisbury Cathedral (home of the Magna Carta) and the ancient Roman city of Bath.

Most of my time there will be spent in Scotland, and much of that retracing the steps of my ancestors in the north-east. There are historic sites there as well, including stones and castles, and I will visit the abbey at Iona as well as Lindisfarne (in NE England). I'll be meeting Cubs and Scouts there, and hearing some good Scottish music! I hope to see part of Hadrian's Wall as well.

One thing I do know is that no matter where we are from or what we have done, we are all connected as family to each other. I hope to gain a better understanding of both the family from which I have come and the family I have in Scottish villages and the Guatemalan highlands. It is only, I think, through taking time to get to know one another, that we can understand ourselves and hope to create a more peaceful world.

I invite you to journey with me as I explore some fo these connections with people of all ages, and you will be able to add your own reflections and reactions to what I say. If you know someone else who'd like to get the email notifications, send me their address so I can add them to the list.

Hope you have a great experience!!
I am so excited for you for this opportunity!! I know there is so much to gain by traveling outside our country and connecting with other cultures. I would think ministering to other people must take it's toll after awhile so I am so happy that you can take this time and rejuvenate!! My thoughts and prayers will be with you for a safe journey for you, your daughter, and her friend! I look forward to reading your blogs! take care,Kathy

Thanks Cathy. I trust you'll be taking care of my "grandson" while I'm away! I don't know if he'll read my blogs - I may try to do something more kid-friendly on Facebook - they have something called "notes" that I think I can use, as well as pics of course.

How true!
Have a great trip Al! How true it is what you said about all of us being connected no matter what our culture, faith or social status. I know you believe that everything we say and do affects all around us, no matter where we are in the world - so good on you for taking the time and energy to learn about others and how we can influence change to make the world a better place, especially for the disadvantaged. I wait with anticipation to hear what you discover about how people living in such poverty and difficult conditions still manage to find joy in their lives. I look forward (as does Austen as well!!!) to hear all about your experiences and explorations. Have fun! Like many others, we will miss you here, but wish for you a safe and enriching time on your travels. Make sure to take time to relax and rejuvenate!!! You deserve it. Adios mi amigo! Ttyl - Bonnie
