So this week has been a quiet one after the excitement of teaching.
Last Thursday was good but hard work in the new powder and Friday was the start of our lessons again with Pat in preparation for us working towards our level 2 exam. After a long day on the slopes we were due to go to Stoneham, a ski resort north of Quebec, however only Nicky and I of the skiiers wanted to go but the boarders were up for it so it was all systems go and plans put into place. As well as going night skiing the resort was hosting the Snowboarding World Cup and that night was the half pipe competition.
Anyway we rolled up at the resort and set off for our first run with Guy and Marie-Eve acting as our guides. The first run was a nice easy blue and the conditions were perfect as the new snow had been groomed creating perfect skiing conditions. We then went up a different lift and took a blue/black run. The top part of the run was great as it was a blue however they had created various rolling hills so you quite often got
some air as you got over the top of the hill. At one point towards the end of hills you had gathered that much speed that when you went over the final hill the force with which you hit the bottom caused you to almost sit down on your skis (nicky and I had much fun over these). We then headed down a nice easy black which was fine however Nicky and I forgot that Guy and Marie-Eve can ski and since they weren't teaching they were going flat out and we tried to keep up...... I can honestly say i have never skiied so fast as I did that night.
After a few runs Marie-Eve gave up and headed inside to warm up with a brew before heading over to watch the half pipe competition. Nicky and I decided we were going to ski some more so Guy joined us - the boarders were playing on the jumps in. the snow park. We started oing down a black run we had already done and I was leading with Nicky behind me and Guy at the rear. Nicky shouted to me that we would take this one a bit
slower and I acknowledged this with every intention of throwing a few extra turns in than we had before however this didn't quite work d it ended up that we skiied the run faster than any we had done before and at one point I got myself caught up with another skiier and it came between a choice of hit him or don't turn so I didn't turn and ended up taking a 90 degree turn at a stupid speed praying that I was going to make it....... I did!!!!!! We got to the bottom and Nicky and I just burst out laughing. It had been a hairy run.
Eventually we skiied/walked over to the half-pipe and stood watching the snowbaorders come down. I will openly admit I'm not a big boarding fan so after a few rounds I was quite board however I wasn't the only one. We were stood near the top of he half-pipe and there was a 2m wide path and then behind us was a steep tree lined bank. It all started with Guy and Sam having a bit of a wrestling fight and ending up rolling down the bank. That was it at
some point we all ended up down the bank covered in snow. It was fun going down however hardwork getting back up. At one point I was climbing back up when they threw Guy down who came at me at speed with his ski boots forward. I duly got pushed back to the bottom and ended up waist deep in snow and unable to move...... Anyone who knows me will realise how much of a big kid I am and how this is up my street for fun!!
The rest of the weekend was a quite one with some skiing and chill out time.
The weeks now are pretty much the same and last week was no different with lessons with Pat. However on Thursday I had a mini eureka moment and something clicked with me in relation to edging and carving. We are still working towards our level 2 however it is still in the air as to who will be taking the exam in two weeks time.... I have lots of work to do between now and then so will be keeping my head down.
This weekend we went to Montreal however I will cover
that trip in my next blog....... I can't believe that I only have 23 days left of this trip!!!!
