Well, what a week we've had! I'll try and split what we've been up to over a few entries so that I can fit more pictures on.

First off, we got the coach from Johor Bahru to Mersing last week. The coach was decent standard and it was cool watching out the windows while we wound our way through the bumpy roads of East Malaysia up to Mersing. When we got there, only 2 hours later, it was sweltering and we trudged up one of the two main roads in Mersing looking for a hostel that the Lonely Planet guide had recommended as cheap, friendly and clean. It turned out to be very cheap, quite friendly but filthy. At the moment we're having trouble uploading pictures (ancient pc's again!) but if I can get them to work I'll add one of the room, or, as we preferred to call it, the chicken coop. It was essentially one large room, sectioned into smaller rooms by bits of plywood that had just been nailed to the wall. However, the plywood didn't go all the way to the ceiling and the gap was filled with chicken wire. Nice. But, it was 25RM for a double room with a shared bathroom, which works out at a bit less than 5 pounds so we thought that it was worth it. We did a quick scan for bugs, didn't find any so went out for a quick bite to eat. We got back and turned in for the night. After about half an hour in the darkness, just as I was about to drift off I felt something on my back. Already paranoid about mosquitoes (they make me swell up badly) I slapped at my back and opened my eyes to see what I had got. As I looked around I saw loads of little bed bugs all over the mattress that had crawled out when we turned the lights off. After waking Amy up we ran around with the bug spray killing loads of them but then heard next door doing the same. We knocked on their door (well, their bit of cardboard) and yep, they had loads of bed bugs too. It was too late to move hostels so we just sat up in the kitchen playing canasta until the sun came up.

Once morning came round we walked to the jetty to catch the ferry to Paulo Tioman, vowing never to sleep in Mersing again.
