Visiting Entebbe wild life education centre

Last week Tereses boyfriend Jakob came to visit for ten days, which also has been a break in our thesis writing. Before meeting him late in the evening at the airport in Entebbe, we went to the Entebbe Wild Life Education Centre, which is sort of a zoo.
It is a very nice park situated at the shore of the lake Victoria and there were a lot of animals, both captured and free… for example is was a very cute monkey which chased Åsa, thinking she would bring some food from her bag when she was actually picking the camera. The same monkey joined us when we had coffee. He was sitting on the table next to us and suddenly saw something he wanted on our table and came closer. When we tried to chase him away he hissed at us and while we ran off from the table (screaming to the café staffs amusement) and had to watch our pack with desinfective tissue being chewed apart…

We had two days to acclimatizing Jakob from the Scandinavian cold and stress to the African heath by spending a day by the pool and visit the national museum and shopping in Kampala.

The climax of this trip: the safari trip! Together with two San Francisco guys we went on a two days safari in Queen Elisabeth National Park in the southwest of Uganda, close to the border of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Driving a whole day we finally arrived late in the evening and had a late dinner at the Simba Safari Lodge where we stayed (some small language info- simba means lion in Swahili).
Most animals one the savannah are active just in the morning since the sun is to hot during the day, and therefore we took of for the savannah in the dawn.

It was not just the animals alone that made the safari amazing; it was the whole environment with the savannah, the star sprinkled sky and smooth sunrise with the warm breeze in the morning. We saw a variety of animals like buffalo, elephants, Ugandan antelopes, warthogs, lions etc. and of course monkeys. After driving in the park we drove down to the Congolese border although we were not allowed to cross the border. However some of the bravest (or most stupid?) in the company paid a visit to Congo (at least for 30 seconds…). The tragic conflict in Congo has made it unsafe to travel over the border since kidnapping incidence is happening apart from the armed conflict.

The same day we also went for a fantastic boat trip spotting animals that were cooling their bodies in the water, when we travelled on Kazinga Channel.

The following day we went for chimpanzee trekking. It was nice to take a break for all the sitting and actually walk thought the rainforest. We made the treeking with armed guides from Ugandan Wildlife Authority (UWA), since there are many wild animals its not allowed to walk alone. Unfortunately the chimps were hiding this day so we only got a glimpse of a chimp after a few hours, but it was really not more than just a glimpse. But we got witness to a baboon fight high up in a three! There are twenty chimps living in the forest and all of them are named and known by the guides of UWA!

Now there are just about a week left before we return to Sweden and it is a lot of mixed feelings. Many things and people here we are going to miss a lot so we will try to enjoy this last week as much as possible. We will be left alone in the house when Jakob leaves, Kenge is going to Rwanda for interviews and our maid with her sweet son is moving. But on the other hand it will give us a chance to really focus on the studies (and shop more earrings, go to the pool, to the restaurants, enjoy the local beer and so on…)

We have great pictures but today internet is too slow for uploding... just wait!
