Dâu pagoda in Bắc Ninh province
Thập điện Diêm Vương inside the pagoda. Festivals take place throughout the year in Vietnam, however January to March according to our lunar calendar is the period when there are more festivals and traditional activities than other months. We call this time "the festive season". Right after we celebrate the lunar New Year, all the pagodas and temples are the popular destinations, as people want to pray for good luck and prosperity for their families in the new year.
In northern Vietnam, the Perfume Pagoda (Chùa Hương) and Yên Tử mountain are the must-go places of pilgrimage for many people. As a result, it's always very crowded at these sites during the festive season. This year, on the 3rd day of the lunar new year, my sisters went to the Perfume Pagoda, but they couldn't get into the main cave (Động Hương Tích), as the cable car was full. A colleague at my office visited Yên Tử mountain last weekend and he said he had to wait 3 hours for a cable car in order to get into the summit of the mountain where Đồng pagoda is located, then he spent another 3 hours waiting for a cable car to go back to the car parking site.

Thập Bát La Hán (2 of the 18 arhats at the pagoda). Sunday 15 February 2009, I traveled with my colleagues to Dâu pagoda and Đô temple in Bắc Ninh province, then Côn Sơn pagoda and Kiếp Bạc temple in Hải Dương province, ie 4 places on a one day trip. We left Hanoi at 7am and back at 5:30pm. These pagodas and temples are not far from Hanoi, only 30-80km and we traveled on some highways, so we felt pretty comfortable. The only challenge for us was to walk up many stairs to the summit of Côn Sơn mountain. However, we did enjoy the beautiful pine forest along the way, as well as the view of surrounding area from the summit of the mountain.
The two temples we visited on this trip are the places for worshiping General Trần Hưng Đạo (Kiếp Bạc temple) and the 8 Kings of the Lý dynasty (Đô temple). At the 4 sites, the locals not only sell products made in their provinces, but also provide some services, for example "viết sớ" (writing your wishes on a paper then put it on a tray with your offerings, worship at the temples/pagodas and burn it in the end), or perform traditional folk songs.

Lorenza & I really enjoy your blogs, they give a great insight into the culture of your country, plus some wonderful photos. We visited the Perfume Pagoda while in Vietnam and it was very crowded, but an amazing place to visit (the walk up the mountain after the boat ride was a challenge). Keep up the wonderful writing.
