Day 11 - Cusco

Last night we took the overnight bus from Arequipa to Cusco a 10 hour journey. This time we booked the bus in advance and managed to reserve 1st class seats for only £10 extra. The seats are big leather recliners and would be much more comfortable if the bus driver did not slam on his brakes every few minutes during the night for speed bumps in the highway.

Cusco is a city sat in a natural bowl created by the surrounding peaks. It has a very commercial feel despite being a city full of history. It has an airport flying tourists in on an hourly basis, many restaurants, shops and hotels. This was the home of the inca empire and many buildings clearly show this as well as the cobbled streets from the colonial era. We are staying in a big old house that is a listed building, positioned up a small steep hill. Although it has excellent views it is hard work walking up the many steps at this high altitude. Suppose it is good practice for Machu Picchu!

Once arrived we headed straight for our hostel, unfortunately to find we had to

wait until lunchtime for our room. By the time we checked in we started with sunstroke (might be something to do with having a nap on the hammocks this morning!), altitude sickness or just warn out from the journey.

By this time we are craving some home comforts so headed into town to find the recommended Irish pub and have shepherds pie! Unfortunately after the walk back to the hostel we were feeling rough so spent the rest of the afternoon sleeping.
