For the last few nights we have been staying in backpackers (hostels). The first on we turned up at was Long Street backpackers. We arrived on the friday afternoon after a long day at the beach to a very busy long street and no where to park!
We buzzed the door and were greeted by the woman who was also the bar maid for the night! It was all pretty manic to be honest. It was what I expected from a hostel on Long street but I think it was a bit more basic than what Luc was used to. The room was nice, clean but again very basic. Double bed and a sink, that was all we needed. The shower room was massive and a bit run down. This was our first experience of having to wait to use the toilet or have a shower, but it was great.
We've been spending a lot of our days down on Camps bay. It is very much like Bondi in Sydney with palm trees lining the road that the beach is on. So many stylish bars and restaurants, just a shame that our budget doesn't quite cover even a cocktail
there!haha I've done a couple of runs on the beach. 10 lengths of the bay which I think was about 8km, on sand! Not doing that again!
There are so many sellers on the beach, selling drinks, food, sun glasses, hats, paintings, wooden crafts and people collecting money for schools etc. You end up getting into a habit of just saying no thanks to everyone that even if someone was trying to sell you something I still think you'd say no out of habit!
On Saturday there was a big horse racing event on called the J & B Met. There were numerous before and after parties one of which was across the road from us. The whole street (Pepper St.) was closed off and the club called Chrome was hosting it. We knew we wouldn't be able to sleep just from looking at the sound system so we though we might as well join in the fun and so we bought tickets for R60 each and two friends, Anthony and Tamsyn came along. We sat on the balcony of the backpackers watching it fill up, or not fill up in this case.
It got to 11 o'clock
and was getting busy so we decided to get going. As we rounded the corner we saw the queue and it was two blocks long! Luckily as we had ticked we didn't need to queue and so walked right in to find ourselves to be the very few white people in the club. I think there may have been about 10 or 20 whites. It was such an amazing night. Everyone was so so friendly, so much more than we'd experienced at some of the student nights out we'd been too.The minute Luc would even smile at another girl they'd drag her off into their circle of friends and start teaching her the moves!
On Sunday morning we'd hoped to hike up Table Mountain and get the cable car down but sadly it wasn't running due to gale force winds. So, we went to the beach instead with our friend, Kim, the girl we'd stayed with before.
We left the beach to go check in at Ashanti Lodge. I'd heard such great things about the place and was super excited to stay there. We turned up and the mansion that it is set in is amazing. Really high
beautiful ceilings and great wooden floors. It has a reallty relaxed atmosphere which was really nice coming from the hardcore backpackers that was Long Street.
Sunday night we went to this bar/bistro called La Med. The resident Sunday DJ's there are called Goldfish. They are the biggest phenomenom in South Africa at the moment and are all over the radio and even played at Ibiza this year with the likes of Basement Jaxx and David Gueta. Eating pizza at Clifton bay and looking out over the rocks whilst the sun was setting was just such a surreal experience and one I'll never forget. Goldfish were amazing and I've just bought their album, I'm pretty sure they'll be on the British charts soon enough!
Its getting to quite a sad stage in our trip having to leave Cape Town and all the people we're leaving behind but we are really excited at the prospect of seeing different parts of the country, surfing the waves at Jeffery's bay and getting up to the wild coast and the very very chilled out Coffee Shack.
I hope all is well and you're all having fun in the snow.
Thanks for
your comments, they make me smile and miss you all lots!
