Day 1 - D-Day, The start of our big adventure

Well this is our first blog! Currently sat on the train from Wakefield to Heathrow after a tiring day of packing and getting ready for departure. We are staying at Heathrow tonight as we have an early flight to Madrid in the morning. Our flight is at 7.30am and arrives in Madrid a couple of hours later, before getting a 12 hour flight to Lima (Peru).

We have had a very busy couple of weeks. It has been stressful sorting out what to do about visas for Russia and China etc and getting the house organised. The last week has been quite a roller-coaster of emotions. We have had to say a lot of goodbyes and leave our jobs which has been a bit scary! We are excited to be going on this fantastic adventure but also sad that we won't see our family, friends and colleagues for 6 months.

We have to keep reminding ourselves that is is ONLY 6 months and we are going on holiday and won't have to go to work for ages, we are very lucky really. I think it is difficult as we have lots of expectations for this trip of a lifetime and have saved our money for a long time and worked hard for this opportunity.

We have been touched by how supportive and excited everyone has been about our plans over the last few months and excited about visiting our relatives who live the other side of the world!

I am quite impressed how light my rucksack is, although Oli doesn't think I will be saying that in a few days time 😊 We are carrying loads of “just in case” stuff and just minimum everything else (like clothes!!) as we can buy stuff as and when we need it.

Starting to get excited now as we get further away from home. They say “as soon as you have left you are already on your way home”. Suppose it will all sink in when we are on the plane for 12 hours.....

Bye for now Laura

Saving money
Guys, To save money you should have given us a call and you could have stayed here and you would have had your own private taxi to the airport in the morning. We wish you all the best and look forward to keeping in contact the the medium of email. Take care Tony, Sarah and Matthew xx
