So, here we are!
After one week in Kampala we are finally getting more or less settled in our house and in the city. We are staying in a house in a quite peaceful area called Bunga, about five kilometres from the city centre. We have a small garden and a porch where we have all our meals. The house with its four bedrooms is quite big for us two (especially looking at the big family living in a small house in our backyard…) but soon Kenge comes to stay here as well, and the house is very nice and comfortable. After a day in the intense city it feels good to come home.
We have a neighbouring bar just beside our house and it is a nice place to enjoy a beer in the sunset. The evening weather is wonderful when the heating sun is gone and the warmth is more pleasant.
We have a maid, Agnes, that take care of the house for us. Coming from Sweden and the debate about household services it felt quite awkward but we have gotten used to it and is now enjoying her company. She lives in our house together with her two-year old very cute son Calvin.
When we go somewhere we take the local minibus taxis that give us a good orientation of the city. There are no bus stops, you get on and off where you want to, and that is one reason to the absolutely chaotic traffic situation! People and cars everywhere! However, it still feels ok to get around since everyone is very friendly and helpful, showing directions when we ask for the way.
We have been visiting Mulago hospital (the biggest public hospital in Kampala) where we will make our interviews with diabetes nurses. Our contact nurse, Josephine, head of the Diabetes Clinic, is very sweet. We have met her twice but she has been very buisy, so we will take her out for dinner next week and hope get to know more about the nurse profession and diabetes care in Uganda. Josephine is involved in several international projects and hopefully we get to follow her in some fieldwork.
Kampala has a lot of nice restaurants, both with local and international food. We have for example tried the ethiophian pancakelike injera with lentilsause and Tilapia - fish from the Victoria lake.
We will try to update the blog once a week. So, until next time, everybody take care!
