From Bombay we took a flight down south to Trivandrium in Kerala for four days of relaxing by the beach. Our hotel, run by a rather odd Dutch guy, was very pleasant, situated amongst palm trees and small alleyways.

Unfortunately, the weather wasn't on our side. Although warm, the sun decided to take it's own vacation for the majority of the time and rain decided to do cover duty!

Luckily we found ourselves a half day activity indoors at the local catering college. We wlked in the day before and asked the Principal if we could have a lesson on Kerlan cooking with one of his chef's. After a little bit of persuading he said yes and the next day we had an amazing lesson with a very enthusiastic chef. He initially took us into a classroom and gave us a briefing of the history of Indian cooking. It was all really interesting, and sitting at the small desk took us right back to school.
We then went through to the kitchen to start cooking. We ended up making 8 dishes in total....3 fish curries, cabbage thoran, okra samba, avial with potatoes and 2 rice based puddings. A lot of them contained coconut, which was in great supply...so many palm trees everywhere. We finished our lesson by eating our dishes on banana leaves for lunch...excellent! As you can imagine Steve was in his element!

That afternoon we took a short walk along the headland to a small fishing village called Vizhinjam. It was bussling with people and a real insight to people's living conditions! Everyone was very friendly, but starred a lot at us as the place is scarcely visted by tourists.

The rest of our stay in Kovalam was taken up with reading, drinking beer & Marsala chai, eating curry, riding the waves in the sea and the odd massage on the roof of our hotel..........it's a hard life!

Cardboard
I'm beginning to wonder of Steve and Lou aren't actually in India at all and they've done a sly one by sending cardboard cut-outs of themselves to be posed in various locations. I've never seen two pairs of the most fixed smiling expressions anywhere! Trip looks great and the keep the blogs coming. Wayne
