Shanghai's Jade Buddha Temple

The Jade buddha Temple in Shanghai is unique. It was built to house two jade Buddhas, hence the name. What makes the temple unique is that visitors are allowed to photograph any part of the temple. In most temples in China, people are not allowed to photograph inside the temple buildings. The temple is fairly new and in fantastic condition. It is very clean and beautifully crafted. To view the jade Buddhas that the temple is named after, you need to pay an extra 10rmb. I found it to be worth it because they were exquisite. I was really surprised at how big they were.

You will find coins lying around on the ground. You are not allowed to pick them up though as I found out. I thought somebody had dropped a coin on the ground, so I picked it up and put it in my pocket. My guide told me that at the Jade Buddha Temple, Buddhist Followers throw coins into the air to symbolize offering money to heaven. I quickly put the coin back on the ground.

The temple has a vegetarian restaurant and a tea shop. I visited the tea shop. The tea they sell is unique. It is medicine teas, which are generally not too tasty, but their teas were really good. I bought some to take back home to Guilin. Located across the street from the temple are a number of shops selling Buddhist items. One in particular sold very beautiful porcelain and ceramic statues. The prices were really good, but I was afraid that they wouldn't make it home without breaking, so I didn't buy one.

I found the Jade Buddha Temple to be really peaceful and quiet despite the fact that its hiding in the middle of one of the busiest cities in the world. It was a nice break from the hustle and bustle of the other sites.

In September 2008 I was sent on an inspection tour with China Odyssey Tours. I am the Marketing Manager of China Odyssey Tours. No one is told that I work for the company, and since I am a foreigner I can experience a tour the way our customers do. That way I get the real experience without any VIP treatment. I check on the sites, hotels, restaurants, and guides to ensure that they all meet our rigid quality guidelines.
