The 'Amazing Bar'
Was really cool - big fan of the infinity pool. Shame didn't get to use it. 17/12/08 = A v.v.v.v.v. rainy day
Good sleep, but woke up early again...need to sort this bladder out! Had another lovely shower (that's 3 in 2 days...body in shock), then headed off to library. Library was really good and were on for ages. Asked about nearest supermarket and then started journey out of Canberra. Had to ring garage first and check about service, because already overdue now done nearly 7000kms, but thankfully they said we could leave until arrived in Sydney - not long now! Then went to garage to re-stock petrol. Petrol man took one look at me in my shorts and vest and said "You know it's going to rain today....ehhh...really heavy rain". Said I'd heard that and skulked out. As set off on journey, realised just how right he was. Absolutely threw it down. Fast, thick and really heavy rain. Started at 12 and was still raining the same at 4pm.
Again decided it was a driving day because of weather and weren't impressed with Batemens Bay anyway, so drove straight through. Decided to head for next major town - Ulladulla (v.inspiring name). Passed loads of nice beaches on the way, but couldn't stop at any
Us in the amazing bar
Not looking quite so amazing unfortunately... because the weather was so bad. Didn't really have anything to do when got to Ulladulla and couldn't decide whether to spend money eating out or on a campsite. Went to information centre to get advice instead and she couldn't express enough in words just how much she loved a bar at Bannisters Point. She said it was the best bar she had ever been to in her life and that we had to go and get a drink there even though it was expensive. Took her at her word (she was scarily enthusiastic). Couldn't afford to eat and drink there, so went to a pub for some typical pub food first. Got scotch steak with mushroom and bacon sauce - lovely and definitely better than the alternative = another sandwich!
Drove to find bar and got quickly changed before heading in - didn't think the khaki Ray Mears shorts would be appropriate for the best bar ever. Was a really nice bar and quite posh (defo glad I changed shorts). Had an amazing infinity pool that looked out across all sea and some sofas to sit and chill on that also overlooked sea. Had a couple of beers
to chill with and Deb got some wine and a sorbet. Got quite cold at one point and ended up wrapping blankets around us like little old ladies. Really nice to sit and chill though, wrapped up in blankets and overlooking sea at same time. Had a good chat and some deep discussions about winning lottery, then headed back to van. Am ashamed to admit that we even borrowed (thats a lie...we stole) a mini shampoo and conditioner from toilets. We running v.low and they must be there for a reason ay? Did feel v.guilty about it 😞, but don't think they'll miss them.
Went back to van around 9ish and then drove to one of our most glamorous night time spots so far....a shopping centre car park. Had toilets and thats all we needed. Straight to sleep.
18/12/08 = Beautiful Sunshine and a field of Kanga's
Decent sleep, apart from the loudest rain have ever heard lashing the van throughout the night and also the loud screeching of a bird that really did sound like a girl being murdered... got my flip flop ready as a weapon and everything! When woke up properly, realised it
was just the bird of death and dozed off back to sleep. Waking up in the morning wasn't pretty. Had to check out of windows to see how busy shopping centre car park was and scuttle off to toilet when got a clear spot of no people. Really need some more camouflaged (no idea how to spell that) pyjamas...although I don't know what shopping centre camouflage would look like. Spotted loads of people doing their normal shop as I was running around car park in pyjamas...how far down ladder of life have I slipped? Got changed and headed straight off. Was a beautiful sunny day and not a cloud in sky.
Drove down to Mollymook beach in Ulladulla to enjoy nice weather. Was a really nice beach and got a good laying spot. Was already quite a few people on beach at 9:30 and by 11, beach was full. Did lots of sunbathing (not sure when we'll next see sun) and even ventured into sea - no swimming though. Waves were really good even though it wasn't windy and was really hard to stay standing. Took a few Merry Christmas shots, then when had had enough of beach, set
Jervis Bay
Our own private beach side resort...one of our better overnight locations. off for Jervis Bay at 3:30. Was only a 45min drive and headed for Hyams Bay = supposed to be one of most beautiful beaches in world, with whitest sand in world. Was pretty amazing and managed to drive van down so that were virtually parked on beach. Absolutely beautiful and even better because were only 2 other people on it, so felt like a private beach. Went to sit on beach, but couldn't sunbathe because had got a little colder. Just nice to sit there even. When had got too cold to stay, went back to van and cooked some soup for dinner - v.nice actually.
Sat in van reading for a while, then decided to try and find a place to sell us a cup of tea or a milkshake. Drove around alot of Bay, but was such a remote area that only managed to find a small conveniance store and even that was closed. Just starting to think journey was a waste, when spotted a kangaroo. He jumped across the road and then through some trees. Cool. Went to turn van round and had what I thought was a bit of a delusion. Out of corner
Us in Jervis
Got a bit cool though. of eye, saw lots of things moving in a field. Slapped straight into reverse and went back down road. Unbelievable. A field full of kangaroos...actually full of them. Got straight out of van and walked quietly up to them. Was an unbelievable sight...a school playing field full of kangas eating grass....just like you might see a field of cows grazing. Totally amazing. Stood watching them for ages. They just looked up at us and carried on. Deb scurried back to van when she thought she heard a dingo, but I was totally amazed. Waited a little while longer, then walked back to van. What a brilliant sight...one of best things I've seen.
Drove back to best beach ever then, really happy and still a little star/kanga struck. Read for a little while, then went to bed, aware in back of mind that parked in a no stopping area - should be o.k.?...
