The sand on this beach is amazing, and squeaks when you walk on it.
Sawadee Krup (Hello!)

It's Thursday evening, and my last evening in Phuket. I leave in the morning for Khao Lak, a coastal town 2 hours north where I am taking my PADI open water scuba diving certification course through SeaDragon. It's a 5 day course that includes 3 days living on a boat where I will be taking my training dives (near the Similan islands).

I'm also in the process of coordinating some volunteer work in the Khao Lak/Phang Nga area after my diving is completed. I've got a phone number for a local Thai pastor that does a lot of service work. More on that later...

As for last night, I hung out with the guys I met from Washington St. and a couple of girls from Germany (Becci & Julie) at a restaurant called Wildfire at the Crown Plaza hotel. The restaurant had a great atmosphere but definitely pricey considering what you get in the way of food. We had a good time though. I was supposed to connect with them again today at Kata Beach but that beach is so huge, I couldn't find 'em. It's at least a couple of miles long.

One of my best meals of this trip. It was from "On the Rock" restaurant in Karon Beach. Crab, whitefish, mussels, squid, etc in a spicy broth. Amazing. $7.50.
I ended up kicking back for most of the day and doing some research on transportation up to Khao Lak. The plan for transportation is to first grab a bus to Phuket Town (the main town on this island). From what I gather, the bus passes by the hotel every 1/2 hour. I'll have to get the driver's attention so he can pull over to pick me up (there is no normal stop here). Once I get to the bus stop in Phuket Town, I can get a bus that heads in the direction of Khao Lak (which also isn't a normal stop but they apparently will do so). The whole trip is supposedly going to cost me $3. Best of luck to me! 😊 If all else fails, I can grab a taxi for $30-40.

I'm not sure what the internet situation is going to be like at Khao Lak but I'll try to give at least one more update before I get on the liveaboard boat. I've been fortunate to find some pretty fast internet spots so far in Bangkok & Kata Beach. The one here in Kata is called Kata Otto (part travel agency and part internet cafe). It's got new LCD monitors, Windows XP, and connection speeds over 200k, something that can not be said for most of the other internet cafes in this area. I had to do some searching to find this place.

By the way, I haven't really commented much on the weather. It is the dry season (and the best season to visit Thailand). The weather has been pretty good (partly cloudy) but super hot. There has been short rain showers from time to time in the late afternoon but mostly dry.

That's it for now! Thanks for reading.

Look! There goes Dave!
