On our first day we headed out to Wat Phnom - a temple in central Phnom Penh where Khmers go to pray for their fortunes. It appeared that a hefty number of monkeys have also cottoned on to this idea. An elephant called Sambo would also hang out around the temple, and we would often see him on the commute home in the evening as we chilled out in a cafe.

The Royal Palace was the most expensive attraction so far (Si was somewhat put out) but once you are inside the walls and see the amazing buildings and how well they and the gardens are kept, it seemed like a great cause.

Tuol Sleng Museum was originally a high school, before being taken over by Pol Pot's administration to become the S21 prison and torture complex. People (anyone from a city, especially those with an education) were taken there for interrogation and torture. If they were able to survive for around 6 months, they could find themselves being taken away to the killing fields of Choeung Ek, where up to 300 people would be brought for execution each day.

It was a depressing day, but knowing the truth about the attrocities is now out, and those responsible are being brought to justice made the day more than worthwhile. The visit made spirit and friendly nature of every Khmer we met was even more astonishing.
