Back Again :-)

So we’re in LA at the moment and we just remembered that we haven’t added anything to the blog about San Diego. It just shows you we were having too much fun enjoying it to write about it! San Diego was really really cool. It had such a relaxed holiday vibe and it was so easy to get around using public transport. Once again the Luas and Dublin Bus are put to shame....

The highlight of San Diego for me had to be the Maritime Museum. The main exhibitions are set up on a ship and as part of the ticket you get to board other ships and look around them and the really cool part was climbing through the tiny rounds doors on the Soviet Submarine. We spent almost a full day between the four ships and the submarine.

We stayed in LuckyD’s hostel which was right at the edge of the Gaslamp quarter. Fantastic location next to the best bars, restaurants, shops and 15 minutes walk to Balboa Park. The hostel itself was one of the best so far. Free make-it-yourself-all-you-can-eat pancakes were certainly an experience. We got some strawberries to go with them and they ended up being nice enough.
On the Saturday Night we went to Rockbottom for dinner (a US chain similar to TGIs) and it was, I quote Gareth “whopper”. They brewed their own beer in the brewery next door and I had some of the best mashed potatoes I have ever tasted!! Nearly as good as the Irish Spuds....nearly! The raspberry martinis weren’t bad either :-)

We also went to Pacific Beach with every intention of going for a dip but chickened out when we felt how cold the water was. Seriously the Irish Sea is warmer in November...brrrr

After much deliberation we decided that, being so close to the border, we had to take a trip down to Tijuana and a short trip it was indeed. We got the Trolley down which took about half an hour and we walked straight over the pedestrian bridge, no border checks etc. and into a local shopping market in TJ. We took a quick look around, fought off a few very eager shop keepers, took a few pics and then looked for the nearest sign pointing us in the direction of the US and headed back.
There weren’t as many tourists as we expected and the pale paddy skin made us stand out a mile off! We proceeded to queue for about 20 minutes to get our passports checked which was about the same time as we had spent in tj, and we headed back to downtown San Diego.

Apart from the stifling heat in the first few days, which made it difficult to walk around and get a feel for the place during the day, we really enjoyed San Diego. It was off to LA to wind up the US leg of our trip. Greyhound bus this time, not as reliable as our Toyota Prius I can assure you.............
