The group from Voyager Autrement (including my friend Marie Boyer) and I --there are 10 of us altogether, 3 couples and 4 single women--left CDG in Paris yesterday at noon. Here's a description of the group:

-Jean-Claude and Agnes from Orleans (he's a cartographer, she works in RH)

-Jean-Marc and Annie from a town near Lille (they're now retired, but before he had a bicycle shop and she was a nursery school teacher)

-Daniel and Francoise from Marseille (he was a train engineer; she worked with disabled children)

-Danielle from Lyon (she owns and manages a perfume shop)

-Christiane from Vichy (she worked with difficult children and social workers)

-Marie from outside Paris (whom I met while on an organized hike in Greece two years ago. She's a librarian and manages 5 libraries in the Marne la Vallee area)

- myself (the only one who lives in Paris proper).

The flight took 12 hours and there's a 7 hour time difference, so it's morning here in KL, where we have a 2-hr. stop-over before our flight to Phnom Penh.

The plane was only half full, so I was able to find 5 seats together and lie down for the long flight. Slept, listened to music and watched two musical comedies: "Mama Mia" and "Carousel" (from the 50s or 60s). I think I preferred the stage musical of Mama Mia, but the ABBA music, Meryl Streep, the scenes of Greece and the dancing in the film are all great. As for Roger and Hammerstein's "Carousel" with Shirley Jones and Gordon McRae, it's aged a lot, but three of the songs are still wonderful: "If I loved you", "When you walk through a storm", and "June is busting out all over." I seem to be in a musical comedy period. Just before leaving Paris, I saw "Rabbi Jacob" at the Palais de Congres with my friend Danielle, and we really enjoyed it.

We'll be visiting the Royal Palace and a pagoda this afternoon in Phnom Penh, so that's when the tour will really begin. I'm looking forward to getting to know Cambodia and meeting the local people. As for Kuala Lumpur, we won't be leaving the airport. I was here about 5 years ago, however, and spent a week visiting the city, which is very multicultural and interesting.

Bye for now.
