Trip to Dresden

Hofheim (green point) to Hassfurt = bus Hassfurt to Bamberg = train (about 15 minutes) Bamberg to Leipzig = train (about 2 hr 30 min) Leipzig to Dresden = train (a little over an hour)

WEDNESDAY

Beth and I had a lovely relaxing morning, thankful for deciding on leaving on the noon train from Hassfurt. After all, why start the first day of vacation exhausted from waking up super early? We found out that we're already tired by the time we reach or destination, no matter what time of the day we arrive. Might as well have an easy going morning and just be able to sleep when you get where you're going.

Anyway, that's our reasoning. Maybe we're just lazy! 😊

We took the bus from Hofheim (Beth's hometown) to the train station in Hassfurt. We had to wait a few minutes for the bus driver to get back, so we admired the graffiti left by local teenagers in their bus-stop hang-out. This probably isn't the best way to add to my German vocabulary ... but I'm always open to learn wherever and whenever I can!

There was only a handful of us to get on the bus and I was actually surprised when the driver left right away. "Why isn't he waiting for more people?" I asked Beth, and then realized we're in Germany not Honduras. Here the public transportation system has a schedule and keeps to it, down to the minute. I just sort of expected the driver to wait a few extra minutes since "there's always room for one more". (Okay, I'm actually laughing to myself right now, because I just realized what else was missing on our bus ride experience! It was too quiet! There was no extra person hanging out the door calling out the names of the next towns they were going to and telling people to hurry up and get on! I'm thinking of how a friend of mine from Honduras mimics them perfectly and it's cracking me up! OK, sorry, I'm coming back from my own little world of wackiness now ...)

We made it to the station with time to spare. It's a quiet little station in a quiet little town with just a few tracks. We boarded a bit after noon and then changed trains twice, once in Bamberg and once in Leipzig, before arriving in Dresden a bit after 5pm.

Beth and I both think train travel is absolutely wonderful. It's a pity it's not as convenient in the States.

We had reservations for Lollis Hostel and the night before Beth put me in charge of looking at maps and figuring out how to get their from the station. It was about a 20 minute walk and we found the right streets, and we only had to turn around once! (My navigational abilities are improving!)

The hostel was crazy and fabulous and we ended up being the only two in our 6-bed room for the 3 nights we stayed. I especially loved the cow painted on one of the walls in the hall and the dirt and dinosaurs in the bathtub! And the motion sensor lights by the doorway and in the hall. Super clean and comfy. 😊

We were both starving, so after unloading our stuff we ventured back out to find something. Not far from the hostel is a Turkish restaurant. DELICIOUS! (There are a lot of Turks in Germany and the food has become "typical" German, even though it's not "typcial" German. Either way I LOVE IT!)

With bellies stuffed we snuggled into bed for a SOUND night sleep, preparing us for our next two days of touring Dresden.

Ha ha ha!!! It wasn't actually to bathe in. There was a shower we were supposed to use. I think they just wanted to make sure no one used the tub ... or wanted to do something interesting with it. =) I know, Turkish food is fabulous!!!
