Pre Moon Party
Where they made sure they gave you a bucket to match your clothes (they didn't really) Koh Pha Ngan The island sits just south of Koh Tao and has a very good reason that many tourists go there every year.... That reason? Well Haad Rin is a UNESCO World Herita......only kidding, it's actually a resort that sees many Westerners head there every month for the 'Full Moon Party' to celebrate the...er full moon. See what they've done there....
'But what will it be like?', I wondered to myself. 'Would it be full of p*ssed up westerners?', 'Would it be dangerous?', but more importantly 'Would they play The Stone Roses?'. Anyway, Travelblog sent this thirty-something bloke (they didn't really) to find out.
Pre Moon Parties The decision to stay a way away from the main part of Haad Rin seemed to be a good one and the 'Liberty Bungalows' would be my base for the duration. This was planned as Martina, Caroline and Sarah were at the next set of bungalows...and luckily for me they didn't mind.
If you aren't able to make it for the actual Full Moon party, fear not yee lucky souls cos there were a number of parties in the interim and go under the name of
half moon and black moon to name a couple. We had however planned it to perfection and arrived 2 days before the Full Moon and whilst there weren't any of these interim parties, the 2 nights before consisted of some (cleverly named) 'pre' Full Moon Parties....so we thought 'When in Rome' and flagged down a taxi truck heading that way.
On arriving at the resort it was pretty geared up for a party. Gone were the temples and anything traditional (as you'd expect) and replaced by pubs, bars and fast food places. The main way to drink was via a 'bucket' which was then filled with a half litre (I think) bottle of spirit and topped up with a mixer or combo of mixers.
Another thing that it is famous for it the fire skipping by party goers (see photo) and flame dancing by locals (no pic). Luckily for me they were also showing a re-run of Fiorentina vs Steau Bucharest on a giant screen, man they really had thought of everything...
Two pre-moon parties later, it was time for the big one (nothing to do with any previous Pop Idol winners..).
Full Moon Party
For the main night we were all prepared with disposable cameras, body paint and a club sandwich each to line the stomach.
As group's designated body painting artist I nearly buckled under the pressure after kind of messing up the first one (it was pretty difficult). Luckily for Martina and Caroline the first one was on Sarah first so I could adjust my style accordingly when I got round to them. They had stars, suns, irish flags/sayings and a spiderman on themselves before I started the masterpiece - the x-ray - on my right arm. It actually looked pretty good, but after about an hour really started to sting....like acid. Looking back now I shouldn't really have been that surprised as it was....how can I put it...er 'brightly coloured fluorescent paint', and the label didn't ever claim it had the 'healing power of plant extracts' or anything...nor was it made by l'oreal. I say that about the reading the label, but we all know I didn't actually read it...come to think of it I'm not sure it actually had one.... Anyway I digress...
As the night wore on it descended into a lot of us
Full Moon Party
Check out the skeleton arm and spiderman thing I thought would look cool on Sarah left arm... getting lost, then meeting up, then more buckets, dancing, more photos (until one camera broke) no Fiorentina re-runs (boo), then pizza, then a snooze (not me), painting stuff on random strangers' arms (yep, me), more dancing (no robotics from me this time) and then, well then......sunrise. Altho I do remember seeing two westerners going off with ladyboys on some point inbetween this lot but luckily for all concerned I don't have photos to back this up...
A couple of days to recover then a flight to Koh Samui followed (Taylor, they are McDonalds-friendly) before a 2 day stop in Malaysia before I would came face to face with the men of the jungle.....
(and to those that are still wondering......No, they didn't play the Stone Roses..)
