Flight path

Make sure to look at the total distance travelled. I crossed the date line and south of the equator again!

I arrived in Brisbane today. The route I took was from T.O. to LAX (Huge crazy airport) and then to Brisbane from there. The pilot announced during the flight that Obama had won the election and was giving his acceptance speech. I still haven't heard it yet, but people are saying it was incredible. While I was waiting at the airport in T.O. I met Colin Mochrie from: Whose line is it anyway? I shook his hand but didn't bother him too much, he was very nice about the whole thing. The flight from LAX was approximately 15 hours and I never got out of my seat once. I slept for about 10 hours because the guy beside me was drinking bourbon and wanted to discuss politics. He said he was very disgusted that Obama won and that he though Bush was a great President. Enough said. I finally arrived in Brisbane around 8:30am aus time, so about 5:30pm Canada time. Nick was waiting for me at the airport and we left quickly because I needed a shower badly.

On the drive to Nick's place I was beginning to form my first impression of Australia and it is truly beautiful. The temperature was about 26C and quite humid, what a nice change from the winter weather in Canada. There are all kinds of gorgeous trees and plants everywhere and there was one tree in particular that was finishing it's bloom. The flowers it produces are a beautiful soft violet that comes off as being a pastel type colour. Nick had so many interesting things to tell me and I had many questions for him. It is going to work out really well for me because Nick has been here long enough to soak up a great deal of knowledge and I get to reap the benefits by asking hundreds of questions. By the way, driving on the left side of the road is really weird.

Nick and I went downtown using public transportation, which is excellent here. There are hundreds of buses that come very often and they can take you almost anywhere very quickly. They have an entire "highway" devoted to buses. Downtown was absolutely beautiful. The Brisbane river cuts throught the centre of the city and divides it into the North and South sides. North side has all of the sky scrapers and business sector and the south side is more residential. We took a river cat (fast taxi boat) down the river at night and the city was all lit up. I'll be posting pictures of these things soon and then you'll have a better concept of the extraodinary beauty. I'm jet lagged, so I'll be going to bed shortly (it's about 10pm).

Already seeing similarities
Hey Jake - good to know that we're both now on the Pacific Rim together. FUCK YOU JULIAN and JASON!!! Haha... Anyway, I wanted to point out the similarities in warm weather, green trees and plants, and the left side of the road driving here in Hong Kong.

Hot weather
It's crazy how hot it is here, it seems to never dip below 20C even at night. It's hard to find a good time to go for a run.
