San Pedro de Atacama
yesterday, after a very early morning wake-up call, by 4am I was already in a bus on my way to Tatio Geysers Field (which is located at 4,200 meters above sea level about 100km away from San Pedro de Atacama & with over 80 active geysers, El Tatio is the largest geyser field in the southern hemisphere and the third largest field in the world, after Yellowstone, USA, and Dolina Giezerov)
already on the road after an hour or so it got quite cold, but I thought that the driver most likely has turned down the heating... well, some time later the reason why it got so cold has been revealed once We've reached the "ticket office" close to the geysers - it was minus 12.5 degrees Celsius!!!
I've tried to "work around" the cold by trying to jump up & down a bit - wasn´t such a good idea at over 4km altitude - in few seconds my hearth was pumping like crazy...
So, for a next hour, while walking in the geyser field I kept a nice and easy pace, however as a result my feet froze into ice cubes (own stupidity - instead of wearing my hiking boots and thick socks, I wore my runners... however, no one expected it to be that cold...). After about an hour in the geyser field it was time to jump into thermas which are being filled with water from the geysers. What a delight - hot water on a very frozen body...
Today is my last day here in a desert - tomorrow I'll head-off to Santiago (a 24 hours bus journey once again... but this time I've booked "Premium" service... :-) let's see how good will that be!?)

I´ve tried to keep as much of my body underwater as I could... the air temperature by then was about minus 10 degrees C

no mapuches in the atacama
great adventure and some great pics. the one of the mud thatched building caught my eye, though. there are no mapuches native to the north of chile. they are in the south central part of the country. around the san pedro area they are atacameNo indians, and further north the aymaras. cheers, and enjoy the rest of your time in south america.
