Talensac Market
I can't wait to buy my basket for the market! A good Sunday to you!
Sunday is a great day to write on my blog because frankly there is nothing to do, except one magnificent thing: go to the market. And I mean MARKET. HUGE. Anything you could want! I didn't have any money, but as soon as I get paid that is where I'm going to do all my shopping. They have any vegetable, fruit, meat, bread, cheese, wine, clothes, flowers, jewelry, furniture, fish, toys, books, you name it that you could want. I even saw fresh bunny meat, fur and all, just off the hunting grounds that you could buy. I couldn't believe it! I saw live shrimp in a box for the first time too, I almost took a picture of these things, but it was almost too disturbing... It was really cool and I'm looking forward to Sunday mornings. So Rachel and I mosied through the market and then grabbed a sandwich before heading back to the apartment. That's about all that I've done today besides fold laundry and watch French tv. It's amazing how big the American elections are here and how many clips they show of racist Americans talking about how they aren't voting for
Obama because he's black, however their words were far harsher....I'm sad that's the image of Americans that they see here. But whacha gonna do? I'm trying to keep the French television on so I can hear it all the time. It's also a hoot to watch American sitcoms with dubbing in French. Here's what I've gathered to be the popular shows here: Heroes, DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES (even the boys), Friends, Cold Case, Nip/Tuck, CSI, and whatever shows or music that have to do with the Jonas Brothers, they're huge here. But anyways, back to the point, that's about all that I've been doing and right now just having a glass of red wine with the roomies. Friday and Saturday were a little more interesting.... Friday night we went to a house party of these people that Rachel had met the week before and it was way out of town in the more suburbian area and I actually got extremely excited when I saw a big American style restaurant called Buffalo House and I yelled, "Lauren, we have to go!" You don't see things like that often that remind you of home. 😊 Anyways, the party was really fun, they were all educated, hippie like Frenchies between the ages of 21 and 30. They were all really sweet and I think the men were fancied with the "American Girls" Lauren and I got a ride back to downtown Nantes and dropped in to a bar to have some wine and use the bathroom and ended up meeting more Frenchies and then went to an after hours club that was so much fun, but so packed! So her and I ended getting back around 4 am and we just had a great night. Saturday morning I woke up to the buzzer for the building door for a package for Lauren. I decided to not go back to bed and got up and got ready for this thing that Agnes, my liason here, had invited me to. So I knew it was something to do with Buddhism, but it ended up being a big regional meeting of French Buddhists (not a lot in retrospect) and she introduced me to the youth section... little awkward, and gave me a copy of the book of Buddha so I could participate in the ceremony. Wow, my skills of reading A LOT of French very quickly and in monotone were put to the test for about 35 minutes. It was quite good practice, but I tell ya that was hard! It was sometimes awkward because they would be meditating for a couple minutes and I would crack my eyes open and look at what was going onAfter they did that, I think it's a tradition for every meeting, they had guest speakers talking about how Buddhism has changed their life, it was actually quite interesting, a cultural experience for sure, and more practice for French of course. I ended up seeing a person at the party that I had met the night before so that was cool. I'm not sure I could do that every meeting they have, but it was a good experience. We also made plans to see some other castles together during the break, so yay free ride! It was very thoughtful and sweet of her to invite me to expose me to something and meet new people. Anyways....after that I came back to the apartment, made a quick trip to a new supermarket we discovered, and didn't really do anything after that, I was so tired from the night before, I ended up watching a bunch of Russell Peters clips and falling asleep around 9:30!
I've added some more pictures into the gallery of the city and of the market, so be sure to check those out!
More to come soon!
xoxo!
