Cycling in Belgium

We hired bikes today with the aim of riding to the seaside! We bought a map from the tourist info office and the man said the cycle path started "just over there". Famous last words... we got lost in the suburbs of Brugges and got shouted at by a police officer for riding the wrong way down a one way street! After about an hour a nice man in a bright red full length cycling outfit asked us if we were lost and gave us directions! He then told us a story about the medieval gate we were standing next to.. Once a traitor/theif/baddy secretly left the city gates open at night to let in the thieves and bandits so they could rob the very rich medieval city of Brugges. After all lots of their gold and valuables got stolen, the people discovered who the traitor was and chopped off his head! They stuck it to the gate and left it there to warn other theives of their fate should they decide to steal from the city! The skull is still on the gate to this day!! eww! (well...a bronze copy of it anyway...)
Anyway
We started on our way! We road through fields, past windmills and along the side of little canals. We stopped in a little village called Damme for lunch! We eventually got to the seaside and it was nice apart from the murky brownish water! At this point we were suffering from extreme bum soreness so we road home. By the time we got back we were nearly dead...some advice from me..don't wear jeans and ride a bike all day. Ouch.
