I don’t think there are two more relaxing words in the English language than, “Hammock nap”. Chong’s place had two hammocks out on the porch that overlooked paradise, with the green forest and exotic birds singing their ever-loving beaks off. I did not see any other people staying at the Inn, so we had this wonderful place all to ourselves. It was hot, but to lie in a hammock after a shower and feel the breeze hit, felt like I was knee-deep in a Jimmy Buffet song. Between naps, I contemplated the world generally and life specifically. I think that happens when you’re one day removed from feeling like your stomach was eating you.
My life. Any life is so precious. Everyone says your health is the most important thing, but I’d have to say your life is pretty important too. I remember after 9/11 how upsetting it was and how many of us never thought we’d be able to be happy again. But today, on this day, I was happy. No, grateful. Grateful to simply be alive. Grateful to be on a hammock, surrounded by a picturesque forest, with my beautiful wife in an incredible country. We not only
have to stop to smell the roses, but stop and feel the wind go through your hair (in my case, bounce off my dome), stop and watch the ant carry his speck of food, stop and watch the bees fly around a funky-ass flower, stop and appreciate everything you have as if it may not be there tomorrow, but be glad and grateful when it is. Does life get better? Not really, until my dream about…
PHOEBE CATES
Growing up, my ultimate crush was on Phoebe Cates. She had the best body of any girl I have ever seen, besides Danielle. Now she’s famous for her classic nude scene from Fast Times at Ridgemont High, but by far her best nude scenes are in the movie Paradise. A Blue Lagoon rip-off with Willie Ames, formerly of Charles in Charge. Now, I know movies are make believe, but what executive thought that Willie Ames and Phoebe Cates would have any type of movie chemistry? I thought Eric Bram and Phoebe would have created much more fire on screen, but that’s just my opinion. I hope whichever executive hired that jerk Ames, was fired big time. But anyway, back to
Phoebe. Being in the jungle, on an island must have inspired me to have a dream about Phoebe Cates. In my dream, we were boogie boarding. No that’s not a euphemism. We were literally boogie boarding. Damn!!!! Maybe I need to double up on my Malarone meds.
After we woke up from our respective naps, we went into West End, and I booked a dive for the next day. Chong’s place was halfway between West End and West Bay which is the least favorable place to stay when you make it to Roatan, because neither place is that different from the other. West Bay is a little more relaxed and West End is more of a party place, but they’re not so different, so just pick one or the other. Because we were in the middle, this forced us to walk a lot.
Roatan’s not as cheap as I expected. I blame Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones who have driven up prices, because they have a house on Roatan. Before we left the U.S, when we would tell people that we were going to Roatan, they would say, “Oh, get the $6 lobster!”. I’m still looking for
that 6 buck lobster. There wasn’t anything for less than $12 anywhere, which is still a great price, but 6 buck lobster would have tasted twice as good.
Bad news. Chong didn’t take credit cards, so we ran into a financial problem. The ATM’s that were at West Bay and West End were broken. Apparently, this is a common occurrence, so make sure you bring plenty of money with you from the mainland. This is yet another reason why you should pick either West Bay or West End. If you have to go to an ATM, and you’re in the middle, it sucks to be you. Imagine, walking to West Bay, finding out the ATM is broken, and then walking all the way past Chong’s to get to West End, to find out that their ATM is broken as well. Not very productive, but fortunately had many Port Royal beers on the way which healed my blisters a bit.
Went to Gumba Limba park to see monkeys and exotic birds. This is where we met our first mean person in Honduras, but it turns out that this was a good thing. I call this section…
