After our 3 hour flight we arrived at Sydney airport. We had to wait ages for the shuttle, after about 45 minutes it arrived and dropped us outside the hotel (near Paddington) that we were booked in as of tomorrow. First impressions of the hotel/hostel were not good. Dirty kitchen and rooms. We managed to get a bed for the night in a 4 bed dorm which only had one other guy staying in it, South Korean guy called Jiz. We got this dorm for the price of the 8 bed when it should have been more.
We went downstairs to the bar/restaurant as we couldn't be bothered to cook. Andy had $7 steak! We then went to bed, still not having paid for the night.
At 8ish as it's getting dark we saw hundreds of large fox bats flying over to roost in the trees opposite the hostel. Very cool and creepy. They make this trip everyday from Hyde park.

Spoke to the woman who runs the place as we had to move rooms to the 8 bed dorm that we had booked back in October. I (Mel) asked for a deal as we were staying for a week and could pay in one go. So I got us a double room for 3 nights for the same price as the 8 bed dorm!!! What a result! So this improved our spirits about staying there. She mentioned paying for last night but after the dealing she had forgot, so we got a free night too!!!
The people in the hostel seem ok so it aint so bad.

We eventually got out and walked into town. The YHA in town is $31 a night and we are paying $20! So saving loads.
We went to Paddys market, near China town, to look about, very big and busy. This sells everything from food and veg to clothes and stuff. We headed to the YHA to see if we could see Ben and Richard who we met in Brazil as we knew they were staying there. This is where we bought our tickets ($58) for a big party at Bondi beach on Christmas day where Judge Jules was playing along with a load more djs.
After a lot of walking around the city we headed back and watched tv and had our super noodles. At about 7pm we headed back to town for a bit of late night shopping. We bought a pair of boardies (shorts) each with our Christmas money and bought each other a baseball cap for Christmas. Got back about 10pm and rung home.

Got up and headed into town. Went to the YHA and saw Richard so we hung about chatting for an hour.
We went back to Paddys market and Andy bought some $10 shorts with his Christmas money and I bought a bikini which I got $5 knocked off the sale price!!
We headed up George Street for the long walk to the Opera house and Harbour bridge.
Up until this time it felt as if we could have been in any city in the world. Once we saw the Opera house we knew we were in Sydney. This was cool as you see it on the tv and then you are actually there. We hung about and took the usual touristy photos then went food shopping for Christmas dinner.
We eventually got back to the hostel for a nice stir fry and the free bottle of wine we got from the plane! Then even after a long days walking we still managed to find the energy to go booze hunting for tomorrow. At 11pm we went to church just up the road for a service by candle light. It was nice and we saw Christmas in with sparklers and the priest gave us a christmas band each. We then rung home as we were the first to have Christmas day.
