Fiji
Nadi - smugglers cove Morning All….we hope everyone is well!
Well as ever we are late…..we left Fiji over 3 weeks ago and have only just got around to updating the blog!
Fiji is definitely one of the most beautiful places we have ever been to in the world so far, it’s so beautiful we actually got sick of the perfect scenery on occasion!! We started our journey, like most, in the capital Nadi which was ok but a bit of a dump! We got to experience some of the mainland life and the local market which was an abundance of fruit & veg and Kava. We had booked 5 days on the mainland before leaving the UK; fortunately we messed up with the date difference so we only had to spend 3 days there. We caught the slow ‘fast Cat’ to Mololo Island, which is in the Manuka islands chain…… and WOW did the world change into the most breathtaking views, the water is the clearest we had ever seen; going from clear blue to turquoise above the coral and then to the most aqua marine glassy blue in the scary depths, where the sea beasts live!! Spending time there has made

Kit found a friend us want to live on a boat for a while, when we arrive in OZ we’ll be looking for work crewing yachts around the Pacific!
We stayed on Mololo island at the’ Funky Fish’ hostel , owned and run by ex All Black Prop, Wales coach and Fijian Rugby Coach Brad Johnstone…. And his annoying wife Rose.
Growing up with the North Sea to play in….we hadn’t snorkeled much, Snorkeling in Fiji is an amazingly beautiful hidden underwater world with so many different brightly coloured, luminous and ultra violet fish, bright blue starfish, oh and sharks & sea snakes, ahhhh!!!!
We went on trips to nearby islands - ‘Castaway’ was just idyllic and you could see the island where they filmed the film ‘Castaway’ and you could also see why you’d have to take out a small mortgage to stay there… beautiful, but the resort seemed full of Toffs! We got some funny looks when a group of scallywags rocked up in just shorts and bikinis!! We kayaked from the island to another island, about an hours paddle each way, to get to the one and only shop across the water to buy food supplies so

Local bus to Nadi town for market day we didn’t have to keep paying the hostel/resort prices for small meals, we love food and nothing will stop us having a feed! We even tried to walk it once but soon into the journey we realized it was a mistake, it felt like walking through a savage jungle!! Our legs got ripped to shreds and sometimes the grass was so high we couldn’t even see where we were going…. disastrous!!! We met a whole bunch of people here, there was a lovely little gang of us together for nearly 6 days, everyone was different but we all got on really well. It was very pleasant to have other people to talk to after 3 weeks in the US without meeting many other travelers. We swapped many emails and invites to stay with them, and them with us when we have another house, it’s handy as they were mostly Ozzies which is where we’re headed next!
One couple Danielle & Chris, fellow Englanders, are on nearly the same trip as us. We spent a few days together after everyone else had left and hope to meet up with them in New Zealand which will be fun.

Kava ceremony were spent playing volleyball, swimming, drinking Kava, crab racing, reading, chatting, playing boules. The crab racing was very funny…… we all had a crab that we had to name & number then they were put in a circle and whoever’s crab got out 1st was the winner, many bets were placed! Our crabs were rubbish!!
We attended a few Kava ceremonies (only 2 were real ceremonies, the others were just a few of us mixing it up very strong and drinking it for fun!!) which was a local drink made from a plant root which tasted of muddy water and was a relaxant and used in traditional ceremonies in the villages when it was a special occasion or meetings were held to sort out any village issues…. Kava is to blame for ‘Fiji time’ coming about and the constant lateness of every schedule! As you can all understand that didn’t matter to us, you relax & take it easy……which we did apart from when you were starving and had ordered your meal at 7pm but did not get it until about 8.30pm…. no joke!!
The Mosquitos were very bad, it was quite a relief on a windy night when

Kidnapped and taken to local Kava ceremony there would be none to bite any spare unbitten skin. I don’t think we will ever be drinking with South Africans any time soon, it was one of the messiest nights so far with many cocktails and bounty rums being consumed…..put it this way, the South African guys had previously run up a bar tab of $1100 (fijian dollars) on their first night, and there was only four of them.
We’d definitely like to return to Fiji at some point....but with more $$ as it’s not a cheap destination anymore.
Anyway all is well, we’ve had a great couple of weeks in New Zealand so far....we’re in Queenstown now catching the last of the snow, which unfortunately is melting very fast and jobs are scarce! So we may leave early for Australia.........
Lots of Love,
Kit & Kate x x
